When I was small my mum and dad took me to Dyffryn Ardudwy for our summer holidays, a village not far from Barmouth which we went to nearly every year when I was young. BR blue DMU's and double headed 37's on summer specials are what I remember, I had loads of photos but thinking I'll never use or need them again they got threw in the bin about 15 years ago. I haven't been there since I was about 12 but today me an Mrs O drove down there today, It's just a single line now with the down platform still in use, the other platform and waiting room is now someone's house, the loop being removed in the 70's as far as I know. I remember one very hot summers day sitting legs dangling off the disused platform with my mum and dad, we wandered down the line picking blackberrys and just having fun, it was a Sunday so no trains, I walked with my dad up to the points where the loop had been taken out, then a backpacker walked past walking the line to the next station, memories I'd do anything to relive again, I can still smell smell the diesel soaked sleepers as the sun beat down on them and it's these holidays that I began my love of trains. Apart from being updated for 'health and safety' (boooooo) and being overgrown nothing has changed.

As we arrived and got out of the car I heard a bit of two tone an then the growl, the next minute a 37 rumbled through, I managed to get a rather rushed pic but better than nothing and something I wasn't expecting to see.

The last time I seen a train here I was in shorts and about 3' tall, new liveries where making an appearance and 150 Sprinters where new on the scene.

Here's a few more from today.

This is something I modelled when I was about 8 on a small 3' board, but it's somewhere I will model again, possibly as a sideline to ELJ as its just got that great country feel.

I'm not sure when I'll start this but if anyone has any info of photos it would be great.

Cheers, Paul

This looks very interesting.  A small layout like this has just that something about it to make it fascinating.  What era would you be modelling this in?  The way you remember it when knee high, or as you saw it yesterday?

I always like side projects like this - whenever you begin it I look forward to following.

Is this the extremely modellable little goods shed from Duffryn Ardudwy?

I'd glimpsed it from a passing train in 2007 and thought "That would make a good model" so went back the following year in search of it.  I visited every station between Llanaber and Llandecwyn before finally tracking it down and seven years on they've all merged into a blur and I'm no longer entirely sure where it was.

One thing I did find curious was its location - right in the throat of the goods yard, where having a wagon parked by it for loading or unloading would completely block access to the rest of the yard.

Thanks William & Mike, I'm thinking of modelling it around the late 1960's early 70's that way I can still have the loop, like in this photo I found on Flickr

Dyffryn ardudwy 9th Aug 74. https://flic.kr/p/so6ZiC

(Not sure if the link works had a bit of trouble copying it)

Also I can use my current fleet of loco's, but I have great memories of the early 80's with br blue so this realy appeals to, but it would be a single line with not much operational potential.

Mike I wasn't really aware there was a goods shed but this is great info.

I'm not sure when I'll start this as my EM version of Edge Lane Junction is my priority but I will be starting to do more research of the area and station etc, I'll be building this in EM to but haven't even thought about board sizes or anything yet.

Hopefully I'll find some more info soon so I can do an update, thanks again for the kind comments and info.

Cheers, Paul

I used to love it Martin, I was only young but great memory's. I remember one night the last train to Barmouth stopped an the driver, guard and an another bloke in a br uniform walked into the Cadwgan pub next to the station, had a couple of pints each then walked back to the train and carried on their journey :)

Happy days.

Once upon a time in the dim and distant past, I decided to model Dyffryn Ardudwy. I even made the station building. I was going to have a narrow gauge feeder. I photographed all the buildings there at the time (1972). the loop had already been taken out of use, and the box was closed.

Tim that's fantastic, thank you so much! I had quite a lot of photos from the early 80's but nearly all but a few got thrown away about ten years ago, once I'm back home I'll go around to my mums and try and see what photos I can find.

Did you ever finish your model?

Thanks so much again, Paul

Ha ha she was quite happy, you can see her walking off the platform in one of the shots. Only spent about ten min at the station, then we walked down to the chalets we used to stay in years ago, the fella who runs it took us around them, it was strange going around somewhere I hadn't been for over 25 years. We're going to take my mum back there for a weekend, she hasn't been away since my dad died an always said she couldn't go back there without him, but she's suprisngly agreed to go.

We then went to the Cadwgan pub for our dinner, the biggest half roast chicken an chips you could eat for under £9 I'd highly recommend it.

So hopefully going back in a couple of months, plenty of photos to be taken I think!!

Cheers, Paul

It is an interesting place if you walk up the road to the bridge and cross the main road there is a footpath that runs along the river into some woods with interesting fall in the river it eventually comes out onto an old drovers road..

I've just received a publication I bought that had Talyllyn Junction in, but guess what, it also had the station next door to Dyfryn, "Llanbedr & Pensarn", a rather nice little station, in between Dyfryn and Harlech. Some great pictures too. ;)

Jinty ;)

Evening all seems ages since I even looked at this thread but thought I'd give a bit of an update, I'm slowly coming to grips with the world of em gauge track building so hooefully once I get the junction built on my main layout I'll have a bit of time to chill and start on Dyffryn, I'm itching to start but lack of space for two projects is one of the reasons.

Hopefully something to show soon.

Bart time :)

Brian

You've lost me on that one Brian :)

Is I can get a few thin pieces of ply I'll lay the track and ballast it I think, I've got a few pieces of flexi knocking about.

Cheers, Paul
