Most of the surviving 76s were withdrawn in the summer of 1981 and quite a lot were stored at Guide Bridge initially. The majority were cut up at CF Booths Rotherham about 18 months to 2 years later.

However, some of the non-multiple working locos were withdrawn in Feb 1977/Jun78 and stored alongside Reddish depot for a number of years, although I'm not sure how many.

The situation was not improved by a renumbering of some of the locos in the mid 70s.

The ones withdrawn in 1977 were 76020 which went to NRM, 76048 (originally 76039), 76050 (originally 76038), 76055; and 76057 which was cut up on site at Reddish.

The June 1978 casualties were 76002, 76004, 76052; and 76056 which was also cut up at Reddish.

A few were withdrawn in the autumn of 1980; these were 76041, 76046, 76047, 76049, 76053.

Eight class members never made it to TOPS renumbering, they were E26000, E26005, E26017, E26019, E26031, E26035, E26042, E26045.

They were cut up either at Reddish or BREL Crewe.

Not all the later withdrawals ended up at CF Booths, though.

76003 (previously 76036), 76037 and 76040 ended their days at Vic Berry's, Leicester.

76029, 76031 (formerly 76044), 76032 and 76033 went to Coopers Metals, Sheffield. 76031 was most likely the last to survive (76020 excluded) as it was not cut up until February 1984.

I find it hard to believe that it is now almost 35 years since electric workings over Woodhead ceased.

Just caught the end of operations and spent a week around Tintwhistle (apparently locally pronounced tintsel according to BBC traffic) and Crowden. The sight and sound of the 76s working up to Woodhead  at night was quite eerie. Went on to incorporate some Tommies on a past layout courtesy of Trix.

I don't have the facility to measure the springs myself but this firm does a pretty comprehensive range. Perhaps one of them will suit? It depends on how strong you want the springs, for use on Deepcar the springs are stretched right out to give just enough tension to hold the pantograph against the wire with minimal uplift.
Maybe someone could measure the springs and advise? You could of course try ebay, but anything to do with Triang and overhead electrics seem to attract silly prices:jester:

I have just noticed that the ipernity, French photo-sharing site, which I use, has a couple of Woodhead / 76 related groups. They are not very big, but they may have photos of interest.

If you have any difficulty navigating ipernity, message me and I will try to help.

NB not all fire walls like ipernity - it seems to be about compatibility not content.

Best wishes

If you want to see these photos or contact the photographers/owners, please be aware that the ipernity site is likely to close at the end of January 2017
