Time for one last update before ExpoNG this coming Saturday when, all being well, our new B Class kit will be launched. As you can see from the image above the label for the boxes are done with grateful thanks to Jonathan Clay for the use of one of his paintings.

Just after I finished doing the labels and sticking them to the boxes as few images pinged into my in box from Peter of the production model build done for writing the instructions.

Packing the kits is still not complete and two items are outstanding, but promised, so it could still be a case of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

The initial production batch is just twenty kits of which twelve are already sold so if you want one on Saturday you will have to be quick. On the plus side though sales have encouraged us to make a start on batch 2 so they should be available by Christmas, maybe, although its more likely to be just into the new year. If you want a Merddin Emrys kit at the weekend you will have to be very quick as I think there is only one left. A start has been made on a second batch of them too but they may take a little longer to produce

As this is new on RMweb jsut a reminder of the spec.....

Complete Kit mostly etched in Nickel Silver

Wheels, Gears and Motor included

Sprung Chassis

Axles and Cranks quartered using D inserts and axles

All Castings are Lost Wax Brass

The initial run is twenty with half of those sold. A second batch will follow as quickly as we can gather all the parts.

I came across this lovely model railway at Chelmsford and district MRC exhibition a couple of weeks ago, not only is the standard of model making excellent and to a very high standard, but the charm of the twin cab locos made my day. I thought my photos were worth sharing. I think Mr J Dean takes all the credit

Having been posting individual topics for different items of news and products I have decided on a change of tack to keep the page views up.

The problem is really one from the way people read RMWeb and most seem to use the "view new content" button and I include myself in this. What it means for product specific posts is that they tend to get viewed the once and then disappear into the depths only to be read if someone knows what they are looking for. My new hope is that by posting new items as a new entry in a single topic that one topic will keep coming round and may get viewed a bit more including the historic bits.

We shall see.

The bumph on the packaging says they're an advanced level kit and that if you are unsure of doing it you should get professional help to do it. I haven't done either yet (but have some to do) but looking at the instructions I think that if you have done the Shay then these kits are well within your ability.

The Shay gears are a press fit on to the shafts and a source of failure is that the force needed it quite high and bordering on that needed to bend the shafts (don't ask me how I know). For some time now when doing shays I have reamed the gears to make them a looser fit and then secured them with a loctite bearing fit. These kits have adopted that methodology and come with a small tube of Loctite 620.

When Haskell Co brought you the 0n30 Na Class 2-6-2 in five version the most regularly asked question was, "are they going to do some rolling stock to go with it?"

Well, the answer is yes with the first one arriving shortly

The first vehicle is the NQR class bogie open wagon which will be followed by others. Instead of outsourcing manufacture to China this time Haskell have set up their own facility in Taiwan where they are based and this is its first product. Why the NQR? Well, it provides a relatively straightforward model for the first release but it also provides a number of components that are also used in the models still to come.

EDM Models / NGTrains will be importing the models as we do the NA class models. There are more details on our website along with the ability to order/reserve models They can be found here

I will only be ordering those reserved plus a very small number for stock. You need to reserve to be sure of getting them

The price is a pessemistic estimate as explained below

Pricing & Shipping.......

It can't have escaped your attention that since a certain vote the exchange rate has taken a dive and continues to fluctuate around its new low. What this means practically is that things will be a) more expensive than they were and its nigh on impossible to pin down by how much until an item is here and paid for.

To cover this the price quoted on the website is at the pessemistic end of what it might actually be. What will get charged when they arrive will hopefully be less than that but I needed to protect myself and it is nicer to be able to tell someone that instead of £115 they're, say, £110 rather than the alternative of having to tell them its gone up

Remember, to be sure of getting the models you want reservation is essential

I'll be honest, I thought they had forgotten about this or given up with it as it was announced in 2009 for a 2010 delivery. The global financial melt down meant that this amongst many projects got parked. I have asked them "if" or "when" on numerous occassion in the last six years and always got a a non commital answer so it came as a suprise to receive a note saying they were on a boat from China to the USA and asking how many I wanted.

The short caboose will cost £79

A word of caution & a prompt - I will only be ordering in enough for those pre-ordered with only a very small quanity for general stock.

I've had the pleasure of something different to photograph and review thanks to Paul at NGtrains in the shape of Australia's Victorian Railways NA Class 2-6-2T. Baldwin built the first two examples with Newport Works then building a further 15 locos from 1898 to 1915 and it's the Newport manufactured model which has been produced by Haskell in Taiwan. Six of the locos are preserved on the Puffing Billy Railway north of Melbourne.

The two examples here are the plain black version with original smoke stack and the Canadian Red version. The black version will also available with a modern tapered chimney (as on 8A) and with red handrails and buffer beams. There is also an Apple Green livery which will suit 6A as preserved. The selection of models can be found on EDM's site here http://www.ngtrains.com/Pages/Haskell/NA1.html

This really is a beautiful little model, a 1/48th scale model to run on HO track to suit the 2'6" gauge of the prototype. There's a wealth of detail which is exceptionally well defined and a well-applied paint job. Although plastic-chassied and bodied there's a respectable 292g of weight to it before the brass 'bullets' shown in the detailing pack image at the bottom are added. Paul feels they may add top-heavy weight and additional weight, if needed, is better added to the side tanks.

The model is expected to be available in the UK in around 6-8 weeks and is expected to be around the £270.00 mark which I think is respectable value for money although the final price will depend on finalised shipping costs and the take-up of orders. The models were well pacakaged but there are to be further revisions to the packaging and some parts in the detail pack before distribution.

Paul is working to create a sound decoder with licensed recordings, further details whether this will be a customer fit or by EDM Models in due course.

I've given the locos a good run around HO track and points and they performed very smoothly with slow-speed running possible through to a maximum speed of around 30mph. The directional lighting gives a pale yellow light which the impressive reflector amplifies.

Due to some unplanned lying about in York District Hospital EDM Models/www.ngtrains.com is temporarily closed.

Having come in to hospital via A&E on Friday night the weekend has been spent with nothing happening. Next is a CT scan but apparently the CT scanners don't work on weekends with a Ryder Cup in the month. Seems likely I will bebetter before they decide what's wrong.

I have only a not so smart phone with me so communications will be a bit strained until I escape

This really is some way off, if it happens at all, but the news escaped in the latest issue of my Newsletter last night so here is a bit more info

The price is at this stage a back of the fag packet calculated guess and will to some extent depend on the interest. If produced it would be 1:48 scale as that is the scale of the artwork and as the matching NA class due to be released in the new year will be 1:48 then there is no sense in doing this different to that.

It is early days but the best way to make it happen is to show interest in and and to spread the word wherever their might be interest

This really is last orders for these items. We have bought all the remaining stocks of Type 1 Coffee Pots (the one without the rear cab) from Ixion in the UK and have imported the last of the Type 2's (with the rear cab and sold out in the UK for months) from Ixion in Australia. As this is posted there are seven type 1's and twenty type 2's left. When these are gone that's the lot and there won't be any more. Conversations with Ixion lead me to think that there won't be a rerun any time soon either.

The models are DC but DCC/Sound ready as they come but we also offer them converted to DCC or DCC and sound. In both cases they come with ZIMO decoders equipped with stay alive capability. The sound versions come fitted with a larger than standard speaker in a modified housing on the underframe and our own custom sound files, The sounds aren't of the original coffee pot loco preserved in Australia but are industrial steam loco sounds from a loco of about the right proportions. A variety of whistle types are offered if you want more than one but don't want them to sound the same

Our new 7mm Scale Narrow Gauge kit for Ffestiniog Railway Double Fairlie `Merddin Emrys' will be launched at the 7mm NGA Convention on Saturday 8th June.

All the etching is in Nickel Silver apart from the bits that should be brass on the real thing. All the castings are brass castings with many of them having been originated as 3D models and printed instead of hand made patterns. The kit can be built for 16.5mm or 14mm gauges. It includes the correct pattern wheels, motors and gearboxes. Name, patent and works plates are also included.

In assembly getting the cab square is fundamental to the rest of it going together so we include an assembly jig to help with this.

All axles are sprung and each bogie is powered by a Mashima 1624 motor

The model is Merddin Emrys as it is now complete with the ludicrous number of mechanical lubricators each bogie is fitted with. The pilot model is inaccurate in one respect only, and that is optional. The model has the greedy boards fitted to the bunkers which were there when we were burning Russian coal. Now we're on Welsh Steam coal we don't need to carry as much and over filling just turns it to dust so they were removed.

The model will be on sale strictly over the counter, first come first served, at the 7mm Narrow Gauge Association Convention on Saturday (see exhibition guide for details). Any of the first batch that are left will be for sale via our website http://www.ngtrains.com sometime on Monday the 10th. Should they all sell (there are 20 in the first batch) on the Saturday the website will take reservations for the models from the second batch likely to be available in September.

The cost of the complete kit with everything you need included is £345

I work from home designing and making mostly narrow gauge models and I import a lot of complimentary models from the USA. Like a lot of people this started as a hobby and just grew to take over all my spare time. Three years ago the day job gave me to opportunity to not have to waste the best part of a day in their offices and since then its been a nearly full time effort. You may well have seen me contributing to other topics on RMweb

I say nearly full time as I am a volunteer driver on the Festiniog Railway and spend some of each year doing that but I also do bits for them utilising my former skills as a chartered electrical engineer specialising in railway rolling stock and traction power modelling (OK, not so much of the latter for the FR)

The other faces you will see, usually when we attend exhibitions, are: -

Annie, my other half. She often comes along to help set off and then goes off to while away the day exploring wherever we are for the show. Don't ever make the mistake of thinking "girlie, she'll know nowt about trains". We met when I was the driver and she was the trainee guard and we have watched her destroy a `pontificating know it all' who tried to tell her the D&RGW K36's were rebuilt from standard gauge loco's (that was the K37 in case you didn't know.)

Mike Bellamy. Mike is my trusty right hand man at shows. As the ex bank manager on the team he is charge of taking your money whilst I deal with enquiries. He also makes a cracking cup of tea

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why has our own topic appeared now in the manufacturers section?

Well, we do lots of promotion in the specialist Narrow Gauge and Industrial shows and magazines but to spread the word a little further we are sponsoring the narrow gauge pages on RM Web and will be promoting our own products and services here.

What's next.

Shortly our exhibition diary will appear as another topic and then we'll start some discussions on our new models. (it might be a bit quiet the start with as we have a big specialist show on Saturday and I ought to be packing stuff for that instead of typing on here)

And just to finish, this is me, driving Merddin Emrys out of Tan-y-Bwlch. Hands on research for our new kit (released on Saturday) I call it
