Does anybody know exactly when steam finished on the Riotinto? The Wikipedia page on the railway suggests 1975 but the wording is such that it might just have been line working that finished then, with some shunting duties continuing past that year. The issue is confused by the Wiki page on RSH 2-6-0 No. 201 which is stated to have been in service until October 1983. This seems a bit unlikely as there is no mention of it in World Steam magazine prior to then - steam working in Spain into the 1980s only involved Ponferrada-Villablino, Andorra-Teruel PS and a bit of shunting and trip work at Cistierna as far as I'm aware.

A few aborted attempts and frustrations over the last couple of years, and I am now about to enter the final straight in my build of a 4ft x 18 inch terminus. I'm modelling FEVE - the Spanish metre gauge network, in the 1980s on a holiday island - it might be the Canarian town of that name, or maybe not.

The terminus will have a passing loop with 3 headshunts (2 of which can function as sidings) and a bay platform. A single track goes off to a 2ft fiddle yard at left, which will be operated with loco lifts to turn any trains which are not multiple unit based.

I've been blocking out the track plan in 3D with the actual buildings and after a few tries to get a sweeping curved station or at least diagonal, I realised that not only would this preclude some of the on-stage sidings, and prevent me using the rear of the board for my H0 remote controlled car models, but it was fairly unprototypical as FEVE liked straight trackplans.

Stock wise, I am building up a stable of 6 units allowing either early 80s or late 80s to be operated, everything is either coming from kits or from 3D printed bodyshells. Billards, MAN units and Ferrostal units, both the blue lined with silver, and the "fried egg" (the latter is easier to paint and line) will feature. The older FEVE units pulled trailers which were non-driving, so there is a bit of running round and shunting needed. Part of my headcannon is that this island ended up with a lot of leftover stock, and therefore classes of unit may have run on for a few years more than the mainland.

Its all DCC and tracklaying will commence later this month.....

There has been a serious accident in Spain with a high speed train derailing into the path of another high speed train near the town of Adamuz, close to the city of Cordoba. Twenty one fatalities have been reported so far. Let's hope that the number killed does not increase.

Electrotren and Arnold have just published their 2026' novelties - you can download them here: trainsdepot.org -

and I can see lots of exciting Spanish railways stuff!

I think the most remarkable novelty in my opinion is the Electrotren "Santa Fe" in HO, a beast of a locomotive that comes as a surprise, as for sure will be costly to develop and expensive to buy, and definitely not for every layout - it is long, a 1-5-1 - but hey, it looks amazing and for sure could be an impressive addition in an epoch III layout.

For Arnold N scale, the 2000T is fantastic news for Talgo lovers - including me! This loco existed in the old Ibertren line but this new loco surely will be an improvement, and looks beautiful in the original red and silver livery.

Apart from that I think the 5000 coaches with the original bellows is great news. I would have preferred the pre-UIC versions for epoch III but still I will get them when they are out, they look great!

	Hello all,

My name is Julio and I'm a modeller based in London. This is my first post in RMweb.

Harinas Arroniz (Arroniz' Flour Mill) is a N gauge layout (1:160 scale) based in the region of Navarra, in Northern Spain.
Even tho the layout doesn't depict an actual place, the intention is to be as truthfull as possible to this particular area, and to capture its atmosphere and "feel" as close as possible. All the buildings are based on real buildings around the area, and have all been scratchbuilt.

The place is somewhere between the railway line Pamplona - Castejon de Ebro, and the intention has been to model this line the way it was before the electrification of the line on 1975. That would allow me to use beautiful Alco and GM diesels, but also steam, as it was still in use in this line until 1974.

Actually I've been building this layout for the last 4-5 years but never shared here so there we go! The layout looks quite finished but still plenty to do. I'll be sharing more information in future posts. Hope you guys like it!

The "Railways of Spain" sub-forum has been a little quiet of late, so I thought I'd add some pictures taken just a few weeks ago. For those that aren't aware, it is possible to travel by train/tram all the way from Alicante to Denia. Tram from Alicante as far as Benidorm and then diesel train the rest of the way. I confess to having a bit of a fascination with the section of line from Benidorm to Denia that is diesel-operated. Just a shame that pending an expensive upgrade, the section between Calpe and Denia is now shut indefinitely. The line is metre gauge throughout with several small request-stop halts. The line has been operated by FGV (Ferrocarril de la Generalitat Valenciana) since 1987 when it was taken over from Renfe FEVE and is no longer part of the national network.

Below are some photos taken at Altea, with some more taken at the interchange station at Benidorm to follow. Some of these have appeared elsewhere on the forum in conjunction with a layout topic, but I thought it worth adding them here.

If anyone has any "past or present" photos of the line, do feel free to add them here.

It occurred to me the other day that RMWeb is awash with prototype photos... "Class 37 Photos", "Prototype for Everything", etc etc, not forgetting some excellent European images in Dave F's thread and the topics of other RMWeb members.

Now, the "Railways of Spain" sub-forum is a relative newcomer to RMWeb, but as Spain is a popular holiday destination for us Brits at least, I can't help thinking there must be a wealth of Spanish railway imagery waiting to be tapped.

It's fairly well knowN that I have a love for Spain, but only recently have I actually taken any photos and then only in one specific area. However, to get the ball rolling, here goes.

The metre-gauge FGV stretches from Alicante up to Denia on the northern Costa Blanca. Seen above is one of the rebuilt diesel units entering Altea from the Calpe direction. October 2016.

The line is electrified only between Alicante and Benidorm. Seen above is a tram/train shortly after arrival at Benidorm. Once free of street running in Alicante, these units can reach a decent speed, hence the term "tram/train". October 2016.

More please. Anywhere in Spain, historic or modern.

	Hello,

A couple of weeks ago while browsing Spanish model railway sites, I saw a small supplier who made some really nice examples of these. Now of course I can't find them again. I've tried all sorts of search terms; and in terms of making my own, I've not got easy access to a laser printer at the moment nor the time to manipulate and resize images.

A real ong shot, but have any others of you modelling Spain seen these and remember where they are, I've tried all the main online shops and Spanish brands. This was a real small supplier producing a small range.

As model shops in Spain are somewhat thin on the ground, I thought we could have a clearing house for reviews of shops, and any "how to obtain" type information.

I know for anything specifically British based then mail order from the UK is the way to go, so maybe any comments on quality of service from Uk based shops could go here also.

My experience of model shops over here is limited to these 2 so far.

http://www.mecamodel.es/

Located in the centre of Alicante, conveniently round the corner from El Corte Ingles as a useful partner park, this is a small shop, but has a cross section of different hobbies represented. There is quite a bit of model railway stuff, primarily Spanish obviously, (with some smaller manufacturers specialist type rolling stock, like Railtrack in England), but amazingly enough a few Bachmann EWS wagons and a half decent selection of Peco and GF N gauge items, so there must be the demand, someone is hiding out there! The stock is in a glass display cabinet, which the owner opened for me without being asked, to allow me to have a closer look, (that's where the RENFE 7700 fascination really got hold!).

A good selection of paint, glues and a few tools, brass and steel wire and tube and wood mouldings make this a useful shop, one I have used a few times.

http://www.hobbymodelismo.es/

This company has 2 branches, one in the Thader shopping centre, (which is near to Ikea, another good partner park!), or the other in the centre of Murcia, which is the one one I went to, as I fancied a tram ride from Nuevo Condomina. A bit larger than the Alicante shop, this shop has a larger selection of model railway stock, a single GF N gauge Pullman being the entire British outline stock. A good selection of Kibri, Vollmer etc kits, HO road vehicles and figures, and a wider selection of HO rolling stock. I was hopeful of some building sheets, but the selection was none too good, but managed to come away with some, along with some Mr Hobby glue, so always good to find a stockist of this line.

All in all, not a bad shop, but with nothing to greatly differentiate from the one above, for me, not worth the extra travel.

Next time, maybe turning left onto the motorway might be on the agenda, as I believe there are some decent model shops in Valencia, especially a decent railway only one.

Probably like many of us, I have a huge selection of model trains but nowhere permanent to run them. ...

I have , however, for the last 20 years being collecting RENFE era V models in HO with the intention of building a layout, probably when I retire! I decided earlier this year that if I start on some suitable buildings, then when I actually start my layout I'll be half way there! My model will be based in Eastern Spain - my wife is from Valencia - and set around the turn of the millennium - we met in 1999 and I first went to Spain in 2001. This time period also coincides with Electrotren's 269 and Roco's 319 being launched and RENFE modelling being brought up to date with a huge increase in the available models and made my switch from Montana Rail Link much easier.

My first building, and my first scratch building attempt, is based on Sagunto station as it was around 2000. It was based on Google earth and maps, so measurements are approximate and although I think it captures the spirit of the building. The choice of Sagunto was more that it fitted the size I wanted and was a challenge I could manage. The frame is from 5mm ply with 2mm card on top with some details from Langley. The colour is my best guess, but it looks fine to me! Once it is place on a future layout I will put in canopies.

(Something in the back of my mind keeps telling me I should convert to Iberian gauge - but that decision can be made in the future...)

I appreciate most folks modelling Spain tend to scratchbuild, but I got into a chat the other day with some other modellers about the lack of affordable and biggish models of apartments (other than council flats) generally, and those that work for a more Med / European setting. Or even a British seaside.....

I didn´t have that much time so I wasn´t hanging about either.

The first view is of 58024. Stabled at the head of an empty rail train under the loading gantry.

This next view is taken from the ramp of an overbridge to the south of the complex.
024 once again in the middle of the complex.

This view shows the whole yard with the maintenance shed on the right.

From L to R are, 58029, 58030 & 58020. It was impossible to see the number of 020 but in the photo you can just make out L43 which is its Spanish identity.

Moving over to the north side of the tracks you drive beside the high speed tracks which practically obscure the view of the locos by the shed. I could just about see the numbers of 029 & 030.
Further on I got a slightly better view of 024.

A bit further on this side is the ballast dump where another loco could be spied but I had to go back over to the other side of the line, this time through a large storm drain, to find the number. The station is closed but you could walk on the platforms without jumping fences.
This was my first view of 015 behind the transformers for the conventional Spanish gauge line.

A closer view.

And after walking along the platform a bit further, I managed to get a full side on view between the transformer building and the site mess rooms.
015 still hasn’t had its Spanish ID number applied.

Here is a view of the station.

And 2 views looking back from the station towards the yard and maintenance shed.

I´m not sure where the rest of the locos are? Maybe a couple were in the maintenance shed or maybe out on ballast trains?

The high speed line to Alicante begins to operate this year although the actual trains are already running services on the original wide gauge tracks and have been for a couple of years. They run through gauge changing equipment in Albacete to get on to the high speed section of track to Madrid.

The line to Murcia and beyond is in construction (earth works, tunneling, etc) with completion due for 2014/5. I presume another materials base will be built closer to Murcia, where I can hopefully get a few working photos and videos.

Regards
Andy

Seville area freight

	Just spotted this article: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/aug/17/soller-mallorca-heritage-train-investors-hostile-bid.

Don't really know enough about it all (how it's managed now and what is planned if the bid succeeds) to comment but wondered if it might be of interest to anyone here.

	Hi there,

About 2 or 3 years ago construction started on a high speed line from Cartagena (Costa Blanca) to Alicante.

The new line was built on a viaduct over the AP7 motorway, outside Crevillente and can be seen as a dedicated line just outside Orihuela, although this section only has one line of wires set up. (The former has both lines wired).

Since when all construction seems to have finished. Certainly when we were at Cartagena at the weekend, there is no sign of any progress.

The perceived wisdom a few years ago was that the high speed lines were also going to go into Murcia, via Balsicas. Again there is no evidence of any progress there either.

What has happened? Has the whole project been shelved?

	Thanks, Neal.

Does anyone know if the huge Basingstoke layout is still at Mora La Nova museum in Tarragona? It was built by an ex pat. He used to have a build blog on here but for some reason he took the posts down. The chaps rmweb name was The Duke 71000. We are off on holiday in the area and would like to visit if the layout is still there. Cant seem to contact anyone on site for confirmation. Thanks in advance.

Trying to access the Mabar website returns a 404 error.

Investigation on Forotrenes reveals that the company closed down on 30 Nov 23. It seems the company’s systems were hacked approx the middle of last year and, amongst other problems, payments to suppliers/manfacturers were intercepted and diverted to the hackers. The company has been unable to recover from this situation.

This is sad news for modellers of Spanish railways, especially as they were about the only manufacturer trying to support both HO and N modellers. (Hornby have Electrotren and Arnold but I get the impression the two divisions do not talk to each other. )

There was an indication in the Forotrenes posting that the owners are hoping to return with a new venture.

No political commentary here - but whilst the UK is still officially in Europe! Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can obtain this magazine in the UK?

For new issues I know they can be supplied direct from the publisher. However the minimum postage charge for this service is a ridiculous amount. Does anyone know of another source where the charges would be relative to the fact that it would be just one magazine.

For back issues - very rare there is anything on UK ebay. Spanish ebay often does have copies for sale, however I have only once been able to get a copy by this route as in almost all cases the sellers will not post outside Spain. Again, any suggestions?

Mrs R and I have just got back from a fortnight in Spain staying in Sitges. One station down the line is the town of Vilanova i la Geltru and next door to the station is the Railway Museum of Catalonia. There's lots to see and while we were there, Thursday morning, there were only another three people wandering around, so no fighting through crowds. Here are a few of the photos I took.

To scratch a modelling itch that I've had for a long time, I've decided to have a go at modelling Spanish Railways in the 1980's, or Period IV in modelling terms.

I've visited the Barcelona area at least once every 10 years or so since the mid-80's, and i'm pretty familiar with the passenger trains of the era, but I'm pretty much clueless when it comes to freight wagons. I only have 2 photos my Dad took in about 1985 as reference, 1 which shows a long train of ferry wagons in a siding at Blanes, and another of a freight headed by a Class 269 arriving at Estacio de França.

The plan is to start small, maybe a small end of branch station? I have a Class 440 emu on its way, plus a Class 269 in Mazinger livery coming as well, so really need to know what freight stock will suit.

Hope someone can point me in the right direction. Cheers.

It is well known that three Class 14's, D9515, D9548 and D9549 were exported to Spain in 1982 and then spent several years in storage at Chamartin Yard, Madrid. What then became of them though is far from clear and although we have attempted to record what is known at https://www.rcts.org.uk/features/diesel ... s/export14 this almost certainly contains some errors and is far from complete.

The three locomotives were presumably seen and photographed on several occasions after leaving Charmartin Yard but how were they identified by those who saw them? Study of published photographs and those found on the web suggests some of the identifications cannot be correct because of detail differences unique to certain locomotives, even allowing for later modifications. These include cab profiles, exhaust stacks, headlights and associated mountings and presence of lifting brackets.

Edit 08/11/18 - We are though now confident we have correctly identified the locomotives in pictures we have seen.

It might though be possible that someone reading this has an unpublished photograph or an observation of one or more of the locomotives. If so we would encourage them to post or make contact. If one of the locomotives was observed and not photographed but details of numbers or other identities carried was made, that information would be of great use.

From the known photographs it does appear that one of the locomotives must have had a significant cab profile change after leaving Charmatin yard. Also, the possibility of a fourth locomotive having been in Spain is not as far fetched as it might appear. Although D9534 that was exported to Belgium in 1975 is recorded in various publications as moving to Italy after overhaul nothing to substantiate this has yet emerged - no pictures or observations despite quoted locations having been visited by enthusiasts when it was supposedly there. Could D9534 actually have seen use in Spain rather than Italy?

Knowing the eye for detail modellers have it might be that there research has come up with something others have overlooked.

Recently drove across Spain, twice, doing Col du Somport- Jaca- Huesca-Zaragoza-Teruel-Murcia-Mazarron, and return via Albacete, Madrid, Burgos, San Sebastian, Irun.

Despite our hotel at Teruel being opposite the station, the only loco I saw eas at Jaca, heading away from the town eastwards, on a container train. It was modern looking, and carried a large number 70, the logo began with "Med..."

	Anyone identify it for me?

Our routes often paralleled railways for quite long distances, both classic and high speed lines, but we didn't see another train.

The memsahib pointed out the large number of modern trains sitting around doing nothing. Having posed a few "stationary exhibits" around my own layouts in the past, I wondered ...
