Zimo speaker advice/opinion sought

I have a Hornby 28xx in which I will put a Zimo MX645R sound decoder.  Given the configuration of the loco (tender), either a Zimo LS28R 28mm speaker or a Zimo LZ10X15S "Sugar Cube" speaker would fit.  I have never used a Sugar Cube speaker and find it hard to imagine that it would be as effective or sound as good as a larger "traditional" 28mm speaker.  Opinion & advice requested as Zimo is not as well known in the USA as it seems to be in UK modelling magazines.  Thank you.

I have been interested in DCC sound for the past 4 years and have only ever used Zimo Decoders and their sugar cube speakers with which you all be astounded as to their quality and sound ability.

They are good enough to be used in some O Gauge locos.

Also to say that Youchoos manufacture their own sugar cube speaker range some of which are curved to fit in 4mm boilers.

I have just upgraded my O Gauge locos with sound using Zimo MX645R and used a Zimo LS 2040 B bass reflex speaker and although I hav'nt tested feel that a Sugar Cube is just as good.

I have been using sugar cube speakers in both 7mmm and 4mm scale locos for some time now. They have a phenominal performance for their size. They generally give more base than is usually given by a traditional bass reflex one. However it is 'horses for courses' and you really need (if possible) to experiment with the type of speaker, its position and its surroundings. All of these factors will change the sound you hear. This can be very useful in trying to get a sound most appropriate to the loco in which it resides. As an example I have found that a Hornby Black 5 with a sugar cube fitted in the smokebox gives a more correct result than the same system fitted in one of my 7mm Black 5s. However a Hornby Bulleid pacific sounds better with a traditional base enhanced speaker, once again in the smokebox. I hate sounds coming from tenders - it's unnatural and the tender body (plastic box) imparts an annoying boxiness to the sound but as they say 'beauty is in the eye of the holder' and I suppose the same could be said of sound to the ear! I only ever use SWD UDrive sound systems - they really are the best. FSB

I use a Zimo 645R decoder in my Class 08 and used to use a QSI oval speaker in my Class 08 but have changed the speaker to a Zimo Sugar Cube speaker and I can confirm there is a big difference to the sound quality, the QSI speaker seemed to have a fair bit of background hiss but no such problem with the Zimo speaker.

Got to agree with FSB with regards to speakers in the tender also on the SWD U drive. Recently completed O gauge Fairburn 2-6-4t and Stanier 2-6-4t 2cyl. One is fitted with a Zimo the other a V4 with U drive. Both have similar speakers placed in similar positions on the locos. The U drive V4 out performs the Zimo set up.
