Sourcing large sheets of clear plastic

Recommended Posts

Wild question out of the blue!

Does anyone know where I could get large clear plastic sheet suitable for terminus station canopies.

I guess I need ideally 100cmx50 and probably 1mm to 3mm thick.

Thanks in advance.

Andrew

How flexible does it need to be? I've bought sheets of Perspex from our local glaziers' supplier, ( you might even find it in B&Q)  but I don't know how much of a curve it would accept. Thinner stuff might be available from an artist's supply shop, or you could try contacting someone like Slaters to see if they can do you larger sheets. I've bought Plasticard from stands at exhibitions, in sheets much bigger than the normal ones.

Wickes, B&Q and Homebase have clear sheet in with the roofing materials generally, in 2mm Acrylic or Perspex

Typically:-

I use it instead of 80thou plasticard as it's availailable in larger sheets, cuts well with a scrawker tool from Squires and snap it off.

There are also specialist companies that supply various plastics to the building industry in all sorts of dimensions. You will probably have a trade counter near you that can supply.

Perspex is slightly odd stuff to work with in terms of solvents that work with it.

As well as perspex sheet there is also clear polycarbonate that is available in various sizes up to 6m x 2m, cut to size and by mail order. A quick google revealed these companies:

The last offer free cutting and payment by PayPal.

If it needs to curve, you may be as well using overhead projector transparencies from a local stationer/office supplies company - It really depends how tight a curve you need - in theory you could even draw a glazing pattern on it and put it through a photocopier!

Note that the glass in station canopies was not normally curved, nor in one piece. Costs would be prohibitive and erection impossible.

The glazing needs to be cut into strips so the arch is made up of a series of flat pieces of glazing.

Good example here http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/28293-manchester-central-clc-gn-warehouses-castlefield-viaducts/page-112&do=findComment&comment=1905579
