Blog- N-Gauge LMS Layout - Foster Street - I am the God of Soldering - Is that my fingers I can smell burning?

Recommended Posts

Well I decided to actually knuckle down and actually work on the of the more important outstanding jobs, still to be completed on Foster Street, the new improved storage yard.

I have never really been happy with the alignment of the boards on Foster Street, which will be improved dramatically on my next layout (I have plans already). Working on the alignment improvements meant that I would have to improve the flow in the storage yards, originally due to laziness on my part and at the time a looming exhibition deadline I managed to fit in 9 loops.

To access one of these loops a train would have to traverse 4 points, so if nothing else this would change, this change has resulted in another project, the amendment of the storage yard control modules, currently under construction by Phil a member of the operating team, and constant if rather irritating champion of something called the Southern Railway what ever that was (The boys a fool) :)

Anyway as Phil is looking after that stuff, that's his problem so on I progressed in my usual modelling style (according to so called friends and family, like a six foot seven Gorilla trying to do brain surgery). Anyway with some of my favourite tools on standby (7lb lump hammer, superglue, mini-drill and other more sensible but less interesting tools I set about it.

A bit of delicate work and I manage to get two strips of copperclad cut (tick one mini-drill)and when put in place they were level and seemed to be what I needed. A few minutes later and I contemplated the use of my all time favourite superglue to help secure the strips but changed my mind and went for my all time favourite contact glue.

Yes before I knew it, the strips were firmly attached to the storage yard, and so was my sock to my foot, I forgot to put the cap on the tube and a drip onto my foot went unnoticed. :( Still I pressed on and got my arch enemy my soldering iron ready for use, as I intended to solder the rails to the copper strip, that's were it went a bit wrong, I still have the belief that my fingers are fire proof, as I did not even singe them.

Unfortunately I discovered that my upper leg is not because like a fool I put it in my pants pocket while it heated. Don't as me why, I did it but, that's what makes this hobby so great, you learn something new everyday, and today I learnt that I can be a little foolish sometimes, though Phil and the Domestic Overlord have commented that I more of a full time fool.

As ever until the next time Happy Modelling :)
