brian daniels
Just been to Wellsbourne to witness the last time you can get a flying Vulcan over a static one. Managed three in one picture if you count the model one! The noise from the display was all it was meant to be, awsume. I will say though the noise from XM655 on it's taxi runs was not as loud as the taxi runs at Bruntingthorpe. This is the last year the Vulcan is flying, see and hear it whilst you can. David Bigcheeseplant
I went to Bicester to see it, waited an hour and found out it had gone direct to Weston Super Mare, there were loads of people waiting an hour or more, so a bit of a wasted journey. RANGERS
I went to Bicester to see it, waited an hour and found out it had gone direct to Weston Super Mare, there were loads of people waiting an hour or more, so a bit of a wasted journey. That would have been a big disappointment but In fairness I believe the diversion was as a result of an airport incident at Doncaster which affected all flights in and out, nothing the Vulcan team had any control over. It's out again next weekend on a tour of all the sites where examples of the V bomber fleet remain.
RMweb Gold The Fatadder Posted June 21, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 21, 2015 Loved seeing it at Airbus in Filton back in 2010. So glad I got to see it in flight at least once... Sadly don't think I will manage to see it again
Rivercider
It put on a fine show in sunny conditions at Weston-super-Mare this afternoon though with only one Hunter, not two as expected. With air displays the situation can change very quickly indeed, the Red Arrows carried out their full display today yesterday ten minutes before the booked saturday display the conditions were good, but five minutes before the start a sea mist came in (most unusually) they flew over on the arrival pass and we briefly glimpsed them, then Red One called off the display so that was that, cheers
brian daniels
Apparently a light aircraft landed at Doncaster in front of XH558 and had to be chased by the fire brigade down the runway resulting in the Vulcan sitting and burning up fuel so they decided to miss Bicester. Karhedron
I saw this at Farnborough last year. Shame we will not get to see it flying again. I have not followed the ins and outs of this story but is it definitely going to become and remain a static exhibit?

Ressaldar
Great photos Brian, very jealous not to have been there, but I was on the other side of the country (on Saturday) watching my son riding in the back seat of a Spitfire at Duxford. cheers Mike

RMweb Gold 2mmMark Posted June 22, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 22, 2015 I saw this at Farnborough last year. Shame we will not get to see it flying again. I have not followed the ins and outs of this story but is it definitely going to become and remain a static exhibit? That was always the plan, to fly again for as long as is safe and then become a carefully preserved ground exhibit, with the capability for fast taxi runs. A complex aircraft like the Vulcan will always be subject to a limited number of airframe and engine hours. The Trust are coming to the end of their supply of usable engines. The airframe has already got a higher number of hours on it than any other Vulcan and they need to stay within what's considered to be the safe fatigue limits. These are on the conservative side but necessarily so. Providing for long term preservation was not in the Vulcan's design brief. The qualified workforce is also reducing, which is due the advancing years of those who have hands-on RAF experience. As 2013 was going to be the last flying season, we've already had a bonus couple of years. There are some who are critical of the Vulcan To The Sky Trust but I think they've done a superb job. XH558 looks and flies magnificently. Mark

SRman
The Vulcans were beautiful planes, but my favourite was the Victor, which, to me, aways looked well ahead of its time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handley_Page_Victor#/media/File:Raf_victor_in_1961_arp.jpg The Vulcan does have the one-upmanship in still having a flying example available. Rugd1022
Nipped over to Baginton (Coventry) earlier to see XH558 do its stuff.... it never fails to impress or bring a lump to my throat. 'Epic' and 'awesome' are overused words these days, but they both apply in spades to this magnificent piece of machinery.

johnd
Came across Manchester yesterday went over some little grass strip calling it's self an Aerodrome, then Manchester Airport and finally Woodford where they were put together at the Avro works before flying off. The big disappointment is that they could easily have passed over where they were designed and built !!!, I mean of course Avro's Chadderton (Oldham) works on the border of North West Manchester (New Moston ) The home of the Manchester, Lancaster, York and Shackleton. What a snub for the place that gave her the start in life !! Enough said just sorry she can't be kept airworthy for longer but machines do have a limited life span. David Bigcheeseplant
After missing it last week, I managed to see the Vulcan today, I went to the hill over RAF Halton with around a few hundred others, the road was packed with people and cars. The Vulcan changed direction just in front of us then flew overhead, everyone then started to make a move before we noticed it was going round again over the airfield so all in all a good spot to see it.
