Is it wrong to cut up a Dock Shunter body ?

I have an old Dock shunter which has a broken motor unit, so I want to cut the body to make an 0n-16.5 body, to fit on another working motor unit.

Is this sacrilege ?

Its your body my friend, there's still lots on Ebay so its not like there super rare. I cut up lots of Triang/Hornby clerestory coaches from the same period and have no qualms. Go ahead and enjoy your modeling. Steve

Given that there are 20 or 30 on eBay at prices between 99p and £50.00 I wouldn't think you're destroying a unique classic, the ones that do sell go for between £10 and £15, which gives an idea of their rarity, (not very).

it's yours I should do whatever you want with it, at least it will give some enjoyment, leave the guilt to others!  Don't forget to show us the results.

Stubby

In my view its only worth keeping / money if its mint and with its box. Then its still debatable as to its desirability/worth.

On the other hand I think its much better to make use out of something that perhaps has served its useful purpose in its original condition

The Dock Shunter was and is the epitome of what we had to put up with when it was new. Noise, sparks, smoke, heat, massive plastic which combined thickness with a sort of translucence, unknown origins, garish and non prototypical colours......did I mention the noise?

For every one on E Bay there will be thrre more silently rusting and gathering dust up in lofts across the nation and wonderous kids seeing late Grandpa's collection of model railways as the loft is cleared and after a few faltering and noisy circuits of long gone track, consigned to yet another loft until........

Cut file and drill with impunity. Like buses there will be another one along in a  minute.

This was just a quickie, new styrene sheet cab and wider footplate using 'H' section Evergreen strip

Still noisy and sparks, but with modified wheels (eventually) it will be put to its original use on my 0-16.5 dockside!

If you click on the "modified to provide etc." part of the  url it will take you to my flickr site and under Albums is one on Port Wynnstay Quay Diesels with a few cheap and cheerful Styrene bodies on propriety chassis.

Right.   So no-one minds.....

Ok, out with the dremmell !!

I'd like to think I could make something reasonable from this - Phil T's example is sort of what I'm aiming for...

We shall see...

As said no rarity, so enjoy creating something new.

From my own view as a child this was an exciting model.

The headlight in the dark, the sparks as mentioned.

Today`s children would not be allowed to play with a sparking object.

I used to enjoy putting as many trucks as possible behind this and giving it full power,

Yes lots of sparks...but great for cleaning the old steel rails.

Any of those knurled wheeled type`s did a great job.

As for its oversize plastic and not real prototype...well it was a child`s toy.

My first cost 75p...compare that with your Heljan and Bachmann to name but 2.

Its also one of the reasons children are not interested in models, they would prefer to spend

their pocket money on a computer game or the like.

I had more pleasure per pound out of model trains of the 60`s and 70`s then i do today from

models costing £100 plus

Many of which just sit around in peoples draw`s and cabinet`s

E.bay clearance is under way.

A 59p toy digger, the good body that will be going back on as an alternative, the good motor, the chopped body and at the front the Tenshodo motor.
