darrel
I have finally got round to starting a new 00 gauge layout. I started off as a 00 gauge modeller before dabbling in N gauge and T gauge. A few years ago I had the idea for a new 00 gauge layout and bought the track. Then never got round to doing anything. The Helensburgh and district model railway club of which im a member was having a clear out and I took the opportunity to take 2 4 foot by 2 foot baseboards which had been salvaged from a previous layout. My original plan had been for a 8 foot by 1 foot layout but hey its close enough. I did alter my original track plan to add an extra platform to the station and a couple of extra sidings. I'm still left with extra space for scenery. There is a two road fiddle yard. One road leads to a two platform station. The coaches in the platform are in the second of the two platforms, this line will be extended from what you see in the photo. The station will be electrified with 25kv overhead wires. The other line from the fiddle yard leads to 2 sidings at the end of which are a fueling point. A carraige washer will be on one of these sidings. The locos will then reverse into 5 sidings at the end of 4 of these sidings will be the entrance to a large maintenence shed in reality I am using a Peco HST shed as a back scene so it will only look as though the sidings continue into the shed the rest of the Peco building will be used as a back scene to hide the fiddle yard. The idea is that it will look like it is a part of a much larger depot. So far the track is just laid out on the baseboard to check it all fits. Don't worry it's not going to stay in my hallway tomorrow I start on clearing out my spare room. I will post updates as work progresses. Feel free to comment on the track plan though. Oh and the name of the layout well I spent many a teenage Saturday afternoon walking around Eastfield depot so it seemed obvious. Although the layout will not be based on any specific region , as I have a large collection of locos so it could operate as different regions at different times and could be different eras depending on what I fancy running. My plan was not to use point motors as it was intended to be in my house only. However after a discussion in the clubroom tonight the layout may be exhibited in the future by the club. So it looks like point motors will now be fitted. That is a wiring job beyond me so it looks like Kenny from the club will be getting a job to do once he is finished the clubs new layout.sorry kenny
darrel
Bit more work done today cleared space in the spare room track laid out and cut not pinned down yet cork underlay will be the next stage. Put a few locos on the depot to check I can fit them in as intended. I have put the shed walls on to give an idea of what I'm trying to do. I need to cut the rails and put the insulating rail joints in on the shed roads and finish cutting the shed roads to the correct length. But happy with progress so far. darrel
Work has been progressing slowly due to work commitments. Nothing worth photographing though. The track is now all pinned down and isolating fishplates in place. Today I have managed to wire up the track for the station, much to my surprise I didn't burn myself once with the soldering iron. Even more surprising is the fact that I can now run a train up and down now! I'm not getting carried away the other line into the depot is a much more complicated affair. Still at least something works. Last weekend I was Lucky enough to win a large job lot of accessories on eBay which will make a huge difference to the final appearance of the layout. darrel
I've been messing around with the standard Hornby platforms I painted the stone side walls it looks better but I will weather it down a lot to improve it future. I used humbrol filler to fill in the holes on the top of the platform. Despite having now airbrushed 4 coats of paint it's still showing through. I know that platforms are not a universal colour but this is not working out like I thought, I may need to hand paint it the grey is 3 parts matt black and 1 part matt white all humbrol enamels. darrel
Finished off the Hornby platforms, I had to hand paint the bits where the filler was showing through. I then painted the white lines along the edge of the platform. Lastly I toned down the white lines and the stonework along the sides using frame dirt colour through the airbrush. To my mind it's a huge improvement on the original platform, it looks a lot less toy like. Mean while I obtained two of the excellent knightwing portacabin kits and painted them with the airbrush and they are now ready for assembly. A word of advice to anyone building these the instructions suggest building them before painting, however due to the flush glazing it's much better to paint them first before adding the glazing and assembling them. I built one years ago but can't find it it's somewhere in the club room. I have searched every box with no luck. What's the betting it turns up once I have finished these two. darrel
These portacabin kits are so easy to build took just under an hour to build both.I will weather them later.
darrel
Been busy today so another update fuel storage tanks have been built from the knightwing kit painted using Halfords industrial grey areosol then weathered with matt black and some iron oxide weathering powder. darrel
Slow progress on the layout I took it down to the club room last night for the club's electrical genius Kenny to wire it up for me. That electrical stuff is beyond me. I also realised at one end of the layout there was no space for low relief buildings so I have decided to add a 8 inch long extension board at that end. George and Bob gave me some advice on how to build it and took the Mickey out of my pathetic attempt at using a saw. I have also cut out the plywood sheets for the backscene. Getting there slowly though
darrel
I assembled the extension board, I think joinery may also be a black art I don't understand. Apart from the top being too wide it really has not turned out too well the other end is ok but this end!!! @#$% will take it down to the club tomorrow night for some ridicule. darrel
I've scratch built a pumphouse for the fueling point. Be kind it's my first scratch built building, and it's better than my poor attempt at a baseboard
darrel
While the layout is down at the clubroom having the wiring done I have been able to get on with some other jobs. The depot walls have been painted and weathered, and lights fitted to them. I also added air conditioning units from the Bachmann range. I also have detailed the signal box using the ratio signal box interior kit. Notice the signalman copy of the sun on the desk.
darrel
Been busy with bits and pieces on the layout This is the senic extension board at the station end of the layout. The road is black wet and dry sand paper from poundland and the pavements are from ten commandments. Not sure about the station building, I'm not a fan of cardboard buildings. It will do till I scratch build something better (or try to) I have also weathered some peco inspection pits.
darrel
This mornings work. Back scene fitted and low relief buildings added
darrel
Got some scenery down on the layout. The long grass is from hanging basket liners from poundland. In the bit of waste ground is an abandoned supermarket trolley and a rusty oil drum. I have started to make fencing using match sticks and car body repair mesh. Not sure about the matchsticks they may look better once painted
darrel
I decided after some consideration to go for the old Dapol station building kit. If this was a real building it would have been modernised by now. So I have installed automatic sliding doors and internal walls, and bricked up the rear door as there is a brick wall behind the building. This is how far I have got so far, weathering is still to be done. Not done much work on the layout since my last update, been too busy with other things and awkward shifts. Got tomorrow an Thursday off the weather forecast looks like it will be good weather for staying in and working on the layout.

darrel
Thanks, not had the chance to do much more to it recently the layout is still down at the club room. Hopefully Kenny can make a start on the wiring now he has finished the club's new layout. Well I hope he has finished the wiring doors open at model rail Scotland in about ten hours time. darrel
Sorry for the lack of updates. Work has started on the layout at the clubroom. Kenny has fixed my track laying mistakes, and has fitted the point motors. Next job for him is wiring it all up. After that I can get the layout home and make a start on the scenery. I've not included any photos as there is nothing exciting about photos of peco point motors, Or holes in baseboards. Fingers crossed the next update will be more interesting. darrel
I abandoned the idea of using the matchsticks for the fence, I have used the ratio fencing instead. Still to put the wires along the top but I think it looks good
darrel
Quick update work is progressing well with the wiring and the control panel is coming on with the switches in place no wires yet just switches. I leave the clever wiring stuff to Kenny as he knows what he is doing. I have been painting and building the excellent severn models workshop equipment kit. Etched brass it includes a work bench ladder tool boxes and tools. Perfect for detailing the depot. Need to make sure I don't lose any bits 00 gauge screw drivers are tiny!! The corrugated iron is tinfoil pressed onto some wills corrugated iron plastic sheet before being glued on and painted
darrel
Flower bed for my platform. Base is the top of one of those small soy sauce bottles you get with a packet of sushi. The stalks are hanging basket liner, and the flowers are grated crayon
