RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted July 25, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 25, 2015 Simple question that I have not had an answer for elsewhere on this and other sites. I need a good SR coach (1960s) green spray can paint if at all possible. I have tried Carplan and failed with that as it seems too thick. There does not seem to be a suitable green at Halfords (I love Halfords sprays for modelling). Any ideas folks? I really don't want to have to get the Air Brush set up and mess up with some sort of Humbrol mix. Thanks in desperation, Phil @ 36E

RMweb Gold gwrrob Posted July 25, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 25, 2015 My limited experience with them is use them new but don't expect them to spray right after storing. Not cheap either.
Guest Lyonesse
Thanks Rob. I had been told by SR modellers that these cans do not spray well but I have never used them so can't comment. Quackers My experience with this product is that it does not give a good finish. I still have a rake of three Comet coaches that I need to refinish in BR(S) green. RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted July 26, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 26, 2015 Thanks guys. Lyonesse, if you find a good spray please let me know. I have used an airbrush before but I am not yet confident with it. I know I can practise, however the setting up of a suitable area in the garage is very challenging at the moment (typical garge storage issues!) and the faff of the whole process unless one is batch spraying is just a hassle. peter220950
Two thoughts, Have you gone further than the standard rack of colours at Halfords? - If you have the exact colour they will match and put it in a can for you in most stores. http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/AdviceArticleDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=21202&categoryId=292528&langId=-1&articleId=1042788 Otherwise check out your local Motor Factors, postage is the issue, but within a couple of miles from me I can get acrylic or cellulose in cans of any colour I want for £10.00, unfortunately P&P would be another £10, but I'm sure it's not just one shop that does it. http://www.jawel.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=155_156 Peter

RMweb Gold unravelled Posted July 26, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 26, 2015 I've not rediscovered the thread, but there was a suggestion here a while ago that not all spray heads are equal. The contributor had used a halfords spray head on another brand's can with improved results. I think it was one of the smaller specialist products which was improved, but might be worth trying with the carplan if you've a spare halfords nozzle. hth Dave

But now all we need is the RAL or BS colour codes for BR(S) green, or whatever. There is a Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_UK_Railways/Colours_list#BR_regional_era with HTML hex codes for various colours, but I haven't found a page of RAL or BS equivalents. I might just give that a try but I still think the Carplan paint seems thicker. The Halfords mix could be an option but I'll need to get a green colour match. The jawel system sounds interesting too. BlackRat
You're quite right, not all spray heads are equal! I have found the best to be with Halfords or Citadel. The main well known makes of railway paint can be a night mare with the nozzles clogging after no time at all. Recently I used a rattle can to bulk spray some track, as opposed to,using the airbrush. The nozzle clogged within a few seconds, and despite cleaning in assorted solvents, including butanone and acetone, resolutely refused to work. On exploration ( I removed the little nozzle head) it looked as if the paint supply tube inside the nozzle had some flash around it. I opened up the hole with attaches to the can with a suitable sized drill, then drilled out the hole from the yellow nozzle to the main tube coming up from the can. I replaced the yellow head into the nozzle and the can worked perfectly, time after time, even after being left for several minutes. I've since tried this with other troublesome cans to find they all now work perfectly. The size of the paint droplet is not affected, as ultimately it is the yellow nozzle that atomises the paint? Worth a try anyway as it worked for me.
number6
I may have settled on Halfords Rover Brooklands Green. Spent ages looking for something suitable. It is perhaps a bit more 'yellow' than the Hornby rendition but I don't think that is a bad thing - I'm not sure I even like their colour very much. I have also given coaches an additional few coats of Klear which darkens it a bit too and causes more reflection which I think is the key to SR green. When it is very flat on a model it just doesn't look right. You can see the reflections in the slightly shiny coach side below - it needs to reflect off a bright surface or a sunny southern sceen! Couple of not particularly good images: but they show up the difference/similarity. I just bracketed the shots a bit. One is pushed a bit lighter and you can see the contrast - its quite hard to tell in reality - different but not in a bad way. Hornby 2BIl on the left, kit built 4COR on the right. Works for me. Now to find a better post war SR coach/unit Malachite - which is not that very bright Bulleid green. I think a yellow or white undercoat with this colour may get me nearer. I do dread these posts about colour because all the old chestnuts come rolling out about colour perception, scaled colour etc. but because I've positive results with this can I thought I would chip in. regards
