RSS Fetcher
Welcome back to New Solway Island! Today's been an uninteresting day, railway-wise, I'm sorry to report, but I did at least get the baseboard into its new position. It's now ready for the real work to begin! Last time I showed the baseboard in various states of completion, and today I can show it to you in its new home in my living room, complete with a curious furry visitor: As you'll see, I've attached an old curtain to hide the fact that it's resting on a couple of old workbenches - the table it had been resting on during the mock-up I showed on the previous blog entry wasn't strong enough to hold the weight! I'll also take this opportunity to provide the precise measurements (I think last time I'd said it was "approx. 50" x 50"). The baseboard measures 49.5" lengthways (from the curtain to the window in the picture) and 48.5" widthways. Nice to be accurate! There's a gap between the boards. That was intentional, and will form part of a stream or some other watercourse once I get around to doing scenic work. It doesn't effect the strength of the board; the three pieces are all glued together and there're two smaller boards underneath running crossways for extra stability. For now, that's the only real indication of where any scenic features may end up. This next image shows off the bits and pieces I've collected so far for New Solway Island: Top left is a Hornby "NER Weighbridge", then there's the Caledonian Belle set around which all this will be based, to the right there's an Airfix 1:76 scale "Matilda" infantry tank (remember the setting is immediate post-war). Next to the tank on the left there's a set of Bachmann station personnel, to the left of those fellows there're a couple of Hornby letterboxes, and finally to the left of the letterboxes is a lovely 1:76 replica of a traction engine. Right now I'm not sure how all of this will fit in together - there's a lot I'd like to do and not an awful lot of space! But I'm sure everything will fall in to place eventually. Not everything has to be used here anyway - this is just a staging ground for a much larger project to come. I suppose that'll be all for this evening! Next time I'm sure there'll be more to share. Until then! - James F. View the full article
