Scotsman Dilema

Recommended Posts

Before I moved to Canada I had grandiose plans to improve my Triang Hornby R855N scotsman by adding Romford wheels and more detail to the body.  I pulled the loco apart and then we decided to move so all the bits were packed away now 25 years later I have unearthed the Scotsman and put it back together after turning the wheels down on a drill press only to realise the motor magnet needs replacing and I probably need to rewind the motor.  Even this won't fix the 20:1 gearing.  So I started to think about buying a new scotsman.  Then last night I was going through some other boxes and found a long forgotten Crownline detail kit to convert the Hornby SCotsman to a late BR A#.  The kit includes the smoke deflectors, double chimney and even the tender with wheels plus other detailing parts.

This has got me interested in using the kit.  I am considering buying a railroad scotsman and adding the kit to it - this will address the problems in getting my old Triang scotsman to run slowly and allow the old one to be retired and maybe come out for an occasional "special".

Of course there are other options I haven't considered because my judgment is clouded by my emotional attachment to a loco I have owned since 1972. sniff! just gone for the Kleenex
