After my first micro layout which was in EM, I have been firmly bitten by the concept. Next up is Crowtrees Depot, in 0 gauge this time. One of the lessons learned from Dunelm was the lack of height, so still using 2 APA boxes I have dowelled and glued the ends together. Same footprint, better use of vertical space. I have also raided IKEA for a "lazy susan" turntable to use as a sector plate.

A few photos taken to show some of the development, and features of compact design.

I came to the conclusion that the back line was too high. I lowered it by 10mm (which was the thickness of the foamboard anyway), which meant I could use Wills stone sheeting for the wall. I was going to use Slaters 7mm but thought the large courses would be overpowering on such a small layout.

Once I had the back line sorted it was time for the backscene. The recess in the frame was filled in with polystyrene ceiling tile, fixed with instant nails. Then lining paper was applied and fixed with border adhesive, this gives a seamless corner free backscene.

The partition was added from 5mm foamboard, the APA framework means it doesn't have to be heavy timber.

The offstage part. The foamboard partition bowed slightly when the adhesive then paint was added to the scenic part, hopefully painting the other side should straighten it out. The shelf was added after a couple of operating sessions showed it was needed. Again 5mm foamboard on a couple of 5" x 4" brackets, fixed with instant nails.

The layout from fiddle yard end, showing the extension of the upper level. Again operating showed this to be neccessary, and the fortuitous use of the 10mm foamboard made it possible.

There is another bracket to support the extension, all 11 1/2" of it. The Hudswell Clarke is right at the end to show the deflection, there is a piece of 10mm square balsa fixed to stop the drop!

The sector plate for the coal drops, 24" long and can take a loco and 2 21T with ease.

Future motive power. Bachmann brassworks 08 to be fitted with an MMP detailing kit, to become 13227 in faded black.

Looking good Mike!

I really like these minimal/pointless-type layouts, they can be so effective and very interesting to operate, and they undoubtedly work much better in larger scales where the bulk and wieght of the stock lends that all important presence to the scene. You have approached things in a really interesting way and, as with all your modelling/layouts, I know that the standard will be of the highest quality. I hope you don't mind me asking but, you mention it being two APA boxes in length, what does that make the overall footprint?

Cheers,

David

David. It is 4'5" x 1'2" over the framework (plus 2" all around when in the exhibition support frame), the upper track extension takes it to 5'3". The scenic area is only 3' x 11".

The next exhibition will be at South Shields Salvation Army on 12/13th February, I hope to have some work done on the upper level and coal drops done by then. Plus a couple more 21T hoppers and some 13 tonners to shunt.

Thanks that is really useful and amazing that the size of the scenic area is so small! Good to hear it will be at South Shields next year, I'll make sure I pop along for a look in the flesh.

Mike,

A belated message to say I really enjoyed seeing the layout at the Tanfield Railway a few weeks ago. It is a great use of such a small space and very inspiring to us with limited room. As always the standard of your modelling is so high, particularly liked the weahering of your wagons!

Looks like there is plenty of 'play' value in the layout too. I've been thinking about trying a similar pointless layout - firstly to save space and secondly to reduce costs of the points! The sector plate/traverser setup seems to work really well on your layout.

Cheers,

David
