Southern_Trains_Fan
Hey. So, right now I am working on an N gauge modern image layout, but I know deep down that this layout won't last forever. It is set up on a frame that is mounted to the wall in my bedroom, and it is coming along well. The thing is though, I used to model in 00 gauge, and due to my space limitations, I decided to sell all of my 00 gauge (well, most of it (I'll come back to this)) to fund my N gauge. This was probably the best decision, but inside, I know that 00 gauge is really what I would ideally like to model. I'm embarrassed to admit that I'm just 14, and obviously still living at home. I know that one day in the future, I will pack up and move out, and sadly, this will probably be the last of my N gauge layout. I have planned ahead though, and this is all I have been thinking about. What I would really love is to build my dream 00 gauge layout. I would like to base it on Heckington, because this is my grandparents local station, and I'd love to re-create this. I have made a track plan in Any Rail 5, and I have thought about it in great detail. I know that I would have to wait until somewhere in the near (but probably far) future, when I have the right amount of space and money to start it off. I have even thought about the methods that I would use, and this brings me back onto the point that I previously made. So, I mentioned that I didn't sell ALL of my 00 gauge stock etc. and this is because there was one loco that I just couldn't bring myself to sell because of this dream of my future layout, and this was my East Midlands Trains class 153 by Hornby. I still have it even though I sold all of the rest of my 00 gauge things many months ago. So, I know that I just wont be able to start REALLY planning my dream layout (as much as I would love too!), because I only bought all of my N gauge things earlier in the year, and starting to plan in 00 gauge again would just be silly at this point. So, all I'm wondering is any advice on what I should do. Should I stop thinking about my dream layout, and just accept what I have, or should I keep dreaming and planning this wonderful 00 gauge layout for the future? Allegheny1600
Hi, No real harm in dreaming away as long as you don't spend your whole life doing it. Enjoy building your N gauge, dream about your 00 and work hard at school, then when you leave school, you can get a decent job or go to uni. Then, save up, get a house, maybe a partner and later, work on your dream layout. But most of all, enjoy being 14, it really won't last long in the grand scheme of things! Cheers, John E. 34theletterbetweenB&D
If you know that you are really set on your chosen subject, buying relevant books, modelling tools and parts and making suitable models can be the aspect of the hobby you can get on with before any layout comes into being. I still have in use kit and scratchbuilt wagons made from about age 13, when between Blunts model shop and the local MRC I 'got educated' about a better product than the then available RTR. My last layout in my parent's home had to be broken up when I was 17, and it was near enough twenty years before an outside line became possible (great fun!), and then a dozen years after that, a permanent indoor layout of some size. All sorts of 'life'; like education, career, endless business travel, marriage and family, other serious committments, happened around all this. If you want it though, the railway modelling can be part of it. It's even more enjoyable now than when I was fourteen, and couldn't run the layout due to hours of school homework, and then my younger brother asleep in the bedroom where the layout was by the time I was free to operate it. Doh!.

I suppose time will work things out. I'll work on my N gauge layout when possible, making sure that I'm still focused on my education, and then in the future, when it comes to it, I'll be able to start thinking about it then

Doh!. I am currently working on a kit of Heckington station building, which I hope to keep and use in the future. And I know of those problems you had back then, I barely get the layout running due to school, revision exams, and when I am free to run it something always crops up But oh well, time shall tell
Jongudmund
If you know what you want to model one day, then you can keep a look out for 'useful' things and bargains and keep them to one side. I think that's what most of us do.

LNER4479
Hey - you gotta have a dream. Cos, if you don't have a dream - howya gonna have a dream come true? (somebody ought to make that into a song...) Don't be embarrassed to admit you're 14! Good heavens, it's fantastic that you've got an interest like this. I can show you idle sketches and drawings, photographs I took, books I bought etc when I was not much older than you, all based around the dream I had at that time. Well, that was over 30 years ago and I now - at last - have the potential to realise that dream. And the dream is still the same as it was 30 years ago. (only trouble is, with RTR improved out of all recognition in that time, some of my older stock, renumbered to tie in with 'the dream' will need to be replaced!) So, good on ya - and dream away...
