DavidB-AU
Porterbrook Leasing announced an order for a further 80 Bombardier Transportation Class 387 Electrostar electric multiple-unit cars on November 2. They are to be built at Bombardier’s Derby plant for delivery between October 2016 and June 2017. http://www.railwaygazette.com/news/traction-rolling-stock/single-view/view/porterbrook-orders-bombardier-emus-to-meet-future-demand.html
RMweb Premium John M Upton Posted November 3, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 3, 2015 That works out to twenty four car units. Will be interesting to see who eventually winds up with these. Place your bets.....
Edwin_m
Unusual not to have a TOC mentioned - I wonder if Porterbrook is buying up the line speculatively as they did with 170s back in the 90s. Bombardier is now producing the Aventra range (including for the Crossrail and Overground orders) and sooner or later will stop offering Electrostars as it won't be worth them keeping lines open for two products in the same market. Porterbrook may think it is worth a punt on one of the existing Electrostar-using TOCs wanting some more, or winning a contract because they can deliver sooner than the competition. RMweb Premium cornelius Posted November 3, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 3, 2015 Hope they test the seats on real humans this time rather than whichever weird vaguely anthropomorphic beings signed off the last lot.

'CHARD
It was only a matter of time.... I have a distinct feeling that this deal was practically concluded up to twelve months ago but kept under wraps until now.
RMweb Premium ColinK Posted November 4, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 4, 2015 We certainly need some more capacity on the TPE Manchester - Edinburgh/Glasgow services. The two most overcrowded trains in the UK are on this route. Last week I had to let the TPE 0927 from Lancaster to Manchester go as it was too full - and that is an off peak service. The two most overcrowded trains in the UK are on this route. Last week I had to let the TPE 0927 from Lancaster to Manchester go as it was too full - and that is an off peak service. I mostly gave up using the train thanks to that (Manchester to Penrith was a journey I used to do regularly, went from 8 or so coaches to a Voyager to a 3 car 185, albeit starting at the airport instead of down south somewhere), but isn't there supposed to be quite a bit of new, longer stock on that now since a lot of them moved away from 185s after electrification? I'm sure I've seen 6 from the motorway, still horribly busy?

Zomboid
Wouldn't you expect some kind of 350 on TPE?
RMweb Premium phil-b259 Posted November 4, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 4, 2015 Wouldn't you expect some kind of 350 on TPE? In an ideal you would - but Desiros are made by Siemens and owned by someone other than Porterbrook. In such a situation if TPE are desperate for more stock then they might have to lump it put up with two incompatible fleets of EMUs. Alternatively maybe the new 387s could go to London Midland so as to allow Desiros to go to TPE.

At the end of the day it will come down to cost/ price, and how long a lease Porterbrook is able to secure. LM's EMU fleet is signed up until March 2018, but again who knows what the new franchise period may herald.... Porterbrook does have 37 Desiros with LM (350231-267), so maybe the idea of such a cascade is not so far-fetched after all.
