RMweb Premium JZ Posted November 14, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 14, 2015 I am in the process of setting the maximum speed of my loco's to something more realistic and was wondering if there was a speed limit on the S&D mainline. Obviously the gradients would limit what was actually attainable on the climbs, particularly with steam loco's**. I think I may have read somewhere that it may have been 75 mph. ** If you know my layout, it hypothesizes that the S&D never fell into WR hands and therefore traffic changed within the normal boundaries of the period. Diesels and DMUs appear, as do alternative steam power.
71H
I did read that the Pines Express did nearly 70mph through Bailey Gate towards B'mth West. Books like Peter Smiths Footplate & others may help give you a rough idea JZ.
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted November 14, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 14, 2015 Maximum permitted speed on the S&DJtR 'mainline' was increased from 60 mph to 70 mph in 1945 - I can't find any later information. LMS (including Midland by implication) design tender locos were restricted to a maximum of 45 mph when running tender first. There were of course numerous places, especially at stations, where the maximum permitted speed was much lower than the overall line limit.
bike2steam
The 60MPH limit was re-imposed about 1961 after it was realised the hammer-blow caused by the likes of the 9F's at speed was doing a little damage to track and immediate infrastructure. Signs showing 60 were in a few places between Blandford, and Corfe Mullen Junction. Amongst our colour photo collection, at the club, are a couple showing the speed limit signs, on that section, painted in yellow, yellow paint replaced white in 1963. RMweb Premium tingleytim Posted November 14, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 14, 2015 I remember rattling along at 70 or so between Blandford and Bailey Gate behind an Ivatt tank on the 12.23 from Templecombe. Not just the Pines that went fast!

geoffers
Think some went faster than 70mph down the 1/100 gradient from Green Lane cutting down the embankment into Bailey Gate. Used to frighten the nadgers off me when I was a toddler, apparently (1956-58). Think, as mentioned above, the limit was 70mph.
RMweb Premium Combe Martin Posted November 18, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 18, 2015 Peter Smith is quoted as taking a rebuilt West Country (Dorchester) south though Bailey Gate at 85 MPH. This was something to do with the Pines being up his ....
bike2steam
Probably the 10.25 from Liverpool, usually a standard 5 turn, and timed to be 18 minutes ahead of the Pines at Blandford, no wonder Mr Smith was in squeaky bum mode, with a slippy Bulleid. Quintus
Just seen this. For the record 73001 reached 98mph on the speedo between Spettisbury and the A350 bridge. The train was the 9.55am from Bath, I was the fireman.
