Trainz 12 Modeling

Hi Trainmaster,

Surprised nobody has replied to this yet..

This looks pretty awesome I must say. I've looked at Trainz before but got bored with it after a while (downloaded a demo, I think, so was quite limited in what I could do) so I never continued with it. But this opens up a world of possibilities. Not just for more 'armchair modelling' but this would also make a great testing ground for new layout ideas, timetables, shunting and whatever more. It will definitely be a lot simpler than spending a lot of money and time building a layout only to figure out that it is not much fun operating or that an extra siding (or one less) would make the layout a lot better!

It would definitely have a lot more possibilities than (m)any track planning software.

How did you make the baseboards? I only thought you could lay track in a infinite landscape with Trainz..

All the best,

Edwin

I love Trainz but have been away from it for a while . My first real use was Trainz2004 , and I have Trainz2010 loaded on laptop. What's the latest version as I've lost the plot a bit on where they are with this now. I think they had professional and drivers editions. I like doing both, building a route then driving it.

Initially I used Trainz to map out model layouts, but quickly realised you could create real life routes so I had Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh and the S&DR out of Bath Green Park .

Great program

I used to use Microsoft train simulator, but found it actually quite boring. There were loads of routes, but very little to actually do on them beyond driving intercity trains across a bare green carpet...

Never tried trainz, though. Looks like it's not trying to be the same thing...

I kind of agree on Microsoft TS . The major difference to me in Trainz is that you could build your own route quite easily and then drive it. I actually found building the route to be more enjoyable , although other prefer operating the route and driving it. Good program . I have lost track of where they went with it after Trs2010 . The only thing yo watch out for was that it required good spec kit to run it, in particular I found the graphics card you used was critical.

It is worth having a look at what a gentleman named Phil Skene has been doing using TS2012 and now TANE for creating model railways. I'm not sure what the protocol is regarding posting links to other forums so I'll just leave it up to the interested to use search. His work is fantastic, and he is one of the few people to not rubbish the latest version of Trainz, but possibly using it for a model railway in a small area rather than creating miles of line doesn't put such a load on the PC.

Trainz is the only one of the current set of railway simulators that isn't just a driving-experience, it has excellent scripting functions and also allows you to either hop off one train and onto another.

I have (and still use from time to time) MSTS, TRS2004/6/9, TS2010, and have also looked at Openrails. Comments above about driving becoming boring are similar to my own experiences, but I did find Trainz better for making model railways and scripting them so I could be the Phat Controller and sit watching things come and go. It was also fascinating to pick some of the C J Freezer plans that I would never have the space for and see what they looked like

My son used Trainz as a hobby in itself.  The worst feature or effect as a layout design tool is that you can lose track of the viewing angles of your layout, not a problem of you like using your camera in video mode and watching your trains on your computer (like I do)  but there is very real danger that a layout can become very boring to watch if you don't have some decent viewing points and angles.  Putting a bridge across the middle of a station is probably the worst example, it looks great in Trainz but just blocks the view in reality.
