Blog- Barry Ten's GWR/WR Blog - Collett 70 foot corridor third - roof, interior etc

Recommended Posts

Here's a bit more progress on the Collett coach, with basic roof details now in place. The instructions give a full-size template for setting out the ventilators and roof ribs, which is very nice, and - although the instructions say that about half the ventilators were later removed - I decided to fit the lot for now, as I reckon it'll be easier to remove them than mark, drill and add more later, if I were to change my mind. I also added the roof ribs, using - following a helpful suggestion from Phil (Mallard60022) - electrician's tape applied to a sheet of glass (actually a mirror in my case) which could then be cut into narrow strips and applied fairly easily. I'm hoping that a coat of paint will seal them on nicely.

I've still got to do the tank fillers at either end.

I also made a start on the interior, as shown here. The kit provides all the material for the interior partitions, corridor screen, floor and seats. Fitting it all is relatively straightforward but a bit time consuming as the moulded seats are - as I've found when using them before - just slightly too wide, so some fairly labour-intensive filing is needed before they fit just right. However, it's not difficult, just a bit messy. As you can see I've done a grand total of one compartment, only another nine to go!

Although there's still quite a bit of work to do on the coach in terms of painting and finishing, I can't fault the design or the fit and quality of the parts. It all goes together very well, and it's already satisfyingly heavy, with a really nice trundle-factor as it goes along the track.
