HSTcallum
Hi all! I'm in to my modern EMUs and one in piticular I am interested is the seimens class 350 desiro, so my question is streight: how would you scratchbuild one of these units? I know there's a seller on eBay called newsteads and he builds emu bodyshells and I would like to build emus similar to him. Any info would be greately appreciated! Thanks! Etched Pixels
Thanks! I've done DEMUs and EMU stock by using the Farish 170/158 as raw materials (brasso the paint off, inflict violence on the roof, vinyl or decal sides and etched ends/detail bits). 20m stock and 4 car plus is a bit trickier because there is no ready source of 20m shells especially desiro shaped ones. There is a suitable drive mechanism from BermardTPM. The colourful bodysides also probably help rather than hinder as they can be done using cut vinyl sides (see electrarailwaygraphics and similar) over clear plasticard and being bright and sharp edged will distract from any other failings 8) So to answer the question personally I'd probably start with a mark 2 coach and brasso. Not quite the right profile and size but would do nicely for a simpler scratchbuild of the shell and they are cheap. TPM does the motorising unit and suitable bogie details. Hacksaw and file will attend to some of the other detail. The ends are going to need work to get the sharp inward angle and the modern style gangways and the noses will be fun although some bits exist that look useful like Farish 158 nose gangway spares from BR Lines. Not sure how I'd tackle the roof - don't have any drawings of the 350 so its hard to evaulate.
