Red Devil
Very, very early days for this one, some of you my know of my other layout 'Grime Street' which is detailed in the blog section and tramway section on here http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/97581-grime-street-an-occasional-picture-thread-leeds-trams-48-54/ http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/blog/172-the-grime-street-blog/ Anyway, whilst work continues on extending that, it's become a bit too big for 'use round the house', so after negotiations with the domestic authorities planning permission has been granted for a small layout concealed within some new fitted furniture.....£ for £ the most expensive baseboard I have ever had to lash out on! So what's it going to be? Very much a small shunting layout featuring a small goods yard more than likely set in the period 65-69, definitely no later than that as I intend to have some representation of the Bradford Trolleybus fleet in action. I can also 'pinch' a few of the road vehicles used on Grime Street as that's set in the mid 50s so some of the 'Fallerised' trucks and buses can be used. Scale will be 4mm more than likely OO using SMP track, but still toying with EM for the railway sections. I don't think working Trolleybuses should hold too many problems for me but we'll see....Hopefully I'll be seeing some sections of Walford Arches in the next few weeks with a view to sussing out what needs doing to get it back to a decent running condition, so ideas theft is more than likely! Hopefully something a bit different for me whilst still be much of the same....'Northern Grot'...It'll be nice to be able to go out and by a few pieces of stock rather than having to make it all too....Then again I can see me not being happy with the odd Trolleybus so that could change. Thought I'd do a thread for this rather than the blog....change is as good as a rest!

Red Devil
EM gauge Trolleybuses will be interesting. Well seeing as most 8ft wide 'Fallerised' buses run on too narrow HO front axles the same thing could be said for them That bit I've already sussed by extending the Faller axle pins and adding a spacer! I was considering setting it earlier and doing it in the tram/trolleybus era and inventing a new gauge...seeing as Bradford ran on 4ft, I thought something along the line of 004FS on 16mm gauge track, but having read the various 00 threads on here thought better of it. Simon Moore
I didn't think Gibson did a em conversion for a ho trolleybus ; )

Red Devil
Well something is actually happening, one of the main attraction to building this is I want to experiment with overhead powered Trollybuses, to that end a TiNY Roe bodied kit as used by Bradford has been purchased and a Faller front arm fitted, the motor mount is a std Faller item but now fitted with a 12v mini motor from Nigel Lawton, so far so good, runs ok hooked up to a 1.5 v battery so if I can get the overhead sorted (and I've a few ideas in hand for that) then it looks like it should be fairly easy. Anyway a couple of pics and a quick test video
RMweb Premium skipepsi Posted January 30, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 30, 2016 Interesting beginning, have you any sizes?
Red Devil
Interesting beginning, have you any sizes? Scenic section will be approx 4ft x 2ft, in effect a dual height layout with 2 circuits of 'Fallerised' vehicles running on the lower level, one will be a trolleybus circuit powered buy the overhead and controllable the other battery powered vehicles, I am toying with the idea of using another Magnorail circuit too as I might be able to use that to run some smaller interesting vehicles too along the lines of this. These will pretty much only be visible for the front section of the two circuits, the railway will be above on a stone retaining wall embankment with the road vehicles ducking under a couple of bridges at the front and end. It's very much a case of a quart into a pint pot but wanted t do something with a bit of everything on. I currently have about 6 finished Faller vehicles available with several more in build, quite a number are now utilising re gauged N gauge Tomytec bus chassis as they're very quick and easy to do. The road vehicle 'fiddle yard' will be under the railway, so a number can be queued and released to do a circuit and return to the hidden section. The Trolleybuses will have sectioned overhead so a couple can be driven onto the viewed side and stopped if required.
Red Devil
Another road vehicle joins the operational fleet, A quick and easy conversion of the Base Toys AEC Mammoth, this uses a Tomytec N gauge bus chassis re gauged to a 4mm size of your choice A longer rear axle is fitted with a set of Faller 163101 rear wheels, the front of the Tomytec chassis is lengthened after removing the N gauge axle and a Faller 163002 steering arm and a 163202 magnet guide. Result is a quick and easy Faller type chassis. (The Tomytec bus chassis are circa £22 inc post from Japan.the Faller bits approx £16). The LR44 batteries have a two hour ish running time and are quickly changed....they're pretty cheap to buy in batches on a well known auction site. The Base Toys cab is removed from the chassis and the plastic supports filed flat then fitted to the chassis extension. The rear chassis involves a bit more work, the cast rear part is cut off along with the loose inner mudguards and fitted to the box part along with false chassis sides that cover the Tomeytec chassis. Various bits and pieces added as tanks etc as per the BT chassis. Result is a quick and easy moving road vehicle with all the reed switches, on/off switch done for you. Anyway a few pics to give an idea.... I'm waiting on supplies of rear wheels so that'll be added when they land....
RMweb Premium skipepsi Posted February 3, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 3, 2016 Is that company still running? I can remember seeing the same livery running around West Yorkshire when I lived there( up to 1992).
RMweb Premium Sasquatch Posted April 3, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 3, 2016 Am really looking forward to watching this develop Red Devil. I took my first steps at tram modeling by hashing up a Feltham with a cheapo trolley mechanism , least to say I'm hooked! Love the Lambretta, those LI series 2s were a bit slow but it looks like your rider hasn't found 3rd gear yet, let alone Beedspeed of Grimsby! Shaun.
