Mallard to leave the NRM York - by Tornado

Recommended Posts

To be honest, it all sounds highly unlikely. Remember when Mallard visited Doncaster works for its anniversary? They were pretty reluctant to allow it out of the museum for any amount of time. They see it as THE jewel in the collection. Even if it does visit Shildon, I wouldn't see it being there for very long.

The NRM are refurbishing the main hall in 2011/12 so everything has to go somewhere. A Holiday in Shildon is better than sending it to Swindon.

Ah I see, they are getting the builders in. It's not that long ago they did a major refubishment of the place, rebuilt the roof and took out the second turntable.

One quote I saw was that the shed once had 4 turntables? Where were the other two?

I remember when it was returned to steam in the 1980s, and worked up to Marlebone for a Royal Mail special, due to flooding it had to go via Aylesbury and up the Met via Amersham, it was stuck at Princes Risborough for about an hour, and it being around Midnight I got invited on the footplate while it waited for a path over the Aylesbury branch. I did have some rather nice pictures although I have no idea where to lay my hands on them.

Well, it's happening, all right

Hi,

Can some one be a bit more specific about the refurbishment as I will be visiting in 2011 and it would be very disappointing if most of the exhibits are elsewhere? If some are at Shildon, such as Mallard, I will have to put that in the itinery, which I have notplanned for at this stage.

Is this refurbishment including the removal of the turntable that was a rumour last year? :O

It makes sense to move Mallard to a secure location, but it seems like a more permanent move being described than that... :(

I would send an E-mail to the NRM.

My understanding is that the curved viewing platform with interactive gizmos for those little ones whose paraents don't know what coal is will not mean removing the remaining turntable. The Peter Allen building will still be open and they are likely to move some of the locos to a tempoarary undercover area where the 2004 event was. There is still a need to move several locos etc. to other locations AFAIK.

Anyone got any idea what the overall result of the refurb is likely to be?

Between Kelvingrove and decisions about the way collections are going to be displayed in Glasgow Transport Museum and the National Museum of Scotland, I'm a bit dubious about these things now. They always seem to have less on display afterwards and far less useful information.

I will be using this as an excuse for a daytrip to York soon though.

At the end of the day, surely taking Mallard to Shildon will boost Shildons visitor numbers. I don't really agree with Mallard being static (lets not go there though) but NRM will have many reasons for the move.

And no doubt it will be very interesting to see on the mainline smile.gif

Out of curiosity, will they be putting a candle in Mallards smoke box to make it look alive tongue.gif

OK, I'll put my work hat on briefly before going back to the fun world of model railways:

We have tried for a long time to achieve a sort of "Treasures of the NRM" rotation of exhibits, so 4472, Truro, 92220 and the V2 have all spent time at Shildon. Some folk speak as if it is the poor relation and doesn't deserve to have Mallard on show for a time (and it won't be forever!) - far from it, and should there be further outstations in future, who knows what will go where. The exhibits belong to the nation and the nation has a right to see them - wherever - hence our very active loans programme. Shildon is less than an hour by train from York if you get the right connection - and makes a different visit. A step too far? I think not, but then I would say that, wouldn't I? It has been thought about for a long time - and has not been a decision taken lightly.

Cheers

Anthony

So what's wrong with locos going to Swindon? At least I get a chance to see them.
