MGR Hooper!
Hey,I've been thinking a lot about using the resin casting method to make some models and detailing parts for myself. But I am a bit confused as to whether it is the best option other than 3D printing. I did see a topic earlier today where a fellow member used a 3D printed FXD part as the master. I was very impressed with the end result of his model. I too am going to be dealing with only diesel and electrics. I do not intend to mass produce these, they are solely for myself and maybe for a few friends I've managed to gather into this hobby. So would resin casting be worth it or does 3D printing still come on top as the easier and quicker method? If resin casting is the way to go then does anyone have a good like to a tutorial on how to go about with it? Cheers!
RMweb Premium Neil Posted April 9, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 9, 2016 Here's some previous discussion about resin casting here on RMweb. I've done a fairly full tutorial on resin casting on Narrow Gauge Railway Modelling Online here. You will need to sign up to the forum to see it, but I cover planning and the theory behind making the master which I haven't seen elsewhere.
jonhall
Horses for courses, resin casting allows you to pay for one much better quality print, then cast from it, whereas doing production in 3d always tends to be a cheaper print, with the inevitable reduction in quality that brings. Of course there are some things that can be printed, which would be really difficult to cast. Jon
