HST 125 Fortieth anniversary set

I have one of the above sets on pre-order. I assume the mk3 coaches announced but to be released are the correct matching coaches for this set as well and I should pre-order as well?

Is the TRFB W40001 correct?

W40001 is correct for 253001. It is actually a TRSB (Trailer Restaurant Second Buffet) although Hornby are using their ex-Lima tooling RFM which has a slightly incorrect window arrangement on one side, and incorrect roof vents, for those who are bothered by such things.

The branding "Buffet" shown on the Hornby website is correct for 1976, as is "Inter-City" on the saloon trailers rather than "Inter-City 125". Hornby are correctly not offering the TGS to match this rake, as they were not introduced until around 1980. They are not offering the other catering vehicle from 253001, (W40501, a TRUK), which has slightly more differences in window layout Compared to the RFM.

Cheers

Much appreciated  for the helpful replies.

Slight change of plan managed to get a R3138 2nd hand which is OK for my needs (so cancelled the pre-order 40th edition), I still have the coaches on pre-order so apart from renumbering the coaches Im assuming they will still be suitable for R3138  or will I need to add INTERCITY 125 etc as well?

Many thanks

The main difference with the R3138 power cars is that they are modelled with a couple of modifications which were added after a couple of years service. There is an exhaust deflector plate on both R3138 power cars (the raised roof section behind the cab, with daylight visible underneath), and a rain strip underneath the cab windscreen. You'd need to check photos, but I think these mods were introduced in 1979 - certainly photos of the ECML "class 254" fleet from introduction in 1978 don't have these changes.

The branding of the Mark 3 coaches changed from Inter-City, Buffet and Restaurant to Inter-City 125, Buffet-Bar 125 (TRSB), Restaurant-Buffet 125 (TRUB) and Restaurant 125 (TRUK) in 1979 so there was probably a cross-over period when some of the coaches had the original branding but the power cars had the in-service mods. I'm sure there are photos out there showing this combination if you go looking.

Edit - found one on Flickr here: https://flic.kr/p/vBTgK4

At the end of the day I don't think many people will notice - so go ahead and buy the anniversary coaches to go with the R3138 if you want to!

Cheers

Tom

W43002 has been repainted into the original 1970s Blue/Yellow livery today and named "Sir Kenneth Grange", complete with set number 253001 on the front.

A livery last seen in 1987.

it was on display at St Phillips Marsh HST Depot today alongside prototype 41001.

As 'boring' as BR Blue would appear to many to have been, a clean ex-works Blue/Grey rake of coaches was as smart a livery as any, & the original Blue/Yellow livery of the Power Cars has never been bettered, either.

Can't believe these things are 40. Makes me feel really old!! :O

Begs the question now as to whether the Hornby HST due this year is in fact this Named BR Blue example or the original one. They may not have been allowed to reveal it was to be named when first announced.

The East Coast set will be released with sounds for the MTU engine. If you want to run W43002/43003 in 1976 condition it would need the sounds from the old Paxman Valenta engines, unless you want to run it in 2016 condition then the MTU sounds will be correct (despite the fact the lighting clusters and former guards compartment would be incorrect for the 2016 condition).

If W43002 was to be "original", shouldn't the Inter-City branding be black inside the white outline?

Yes but No..

I don't think it ever left the works in Black/Yellow livery, but I understand the black lining inside the white highlight persisted for a while in service (unlike the majority of the class).

it was repainted with blue inside the white outline at some point.

But being pedantic.. it didn't have an orange safety stripe either in 1976.

Here's the hst line up... (Taken using panoramic mode on an iPhone, click the picture to enlarge, scroll left to right)
