peak experience
Hi all,Leicester Diesel Depot is a large building with only a single covered track (plus a track under a lean to round the side). Would anyone be able to tell me what the rest of the building was used for to have such a large footprint?
jonny777
There was a large roundhouse on the site in steam days. Maybe it was part of that complex? See - http://www.nigeltout.com/037_b03_Leicester_19670813.jpg

RMweb Premium Clive Mortimore Posted April 20, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 20, 2016 The "diesel depot" was built as a steam locomotive repair workshop when Leicester shed was rebuilt by the LMS post war. It was later converted to repairing diesel locomotives during the 1960s.

Rail-Online
The "diesel depot" was built as a steam locomotive repair workshop when Leicester shed was rebuilt by the LMS post war. It was later converted to repairing diesel locomotives during the 1960s. I seem to recall there was a wheeldrop in there in steam days, possibly still there in the 1970s. I also seem to recall that there was sometimes a 'foreign' (ie not Leicester) 08 dumped at the back of the yard missing a set of drivers in the late 1970s which supports this distant memory of the working wheeldrop. The shed always had two local 08s parked round the side but internally any class could be seen, I remember mostly 08's, 47, 25, and Peaks in there.
