edcayton
I was not happy to receive an e-mail from Model Rail trying to sell me insurance. If I want a model railway magazine then I might buy Model Rail (believe me this is less likely now), but if I want insurance I'll probably go to Direct Line, Did many other people get such an e-mail, and what are your thoughts? Arthur
Wouldn't bother me. It's the way modern marketing works, targeting those whose profile fits the potential customer. At least this one is well directed, anyone on Model Rails database is a reasonable candidate for model railway insurance. Not interested?, just delete. I might well consider them before a more general insurer like Direct Line as they could well have a better understanding of model railway insurance needs. I get far less useful marketing emails sent to me.
RMweb Gold Ryde-on-time Posted April 22, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 22, 2016 I received it too, deleted in a fraction of a second so no big deal. I subscribe to Model Rail so they have my e-mail address and presumably I ticked a box (or didn't) which gave my permission to use it (which you must have done too) The publishers will have got some money from the insurance comparison site so that helps the Model Rail finances. Just be more careful what you allow your e-mail to be used for in future
grahame
I guess it depends on whether you opted in or out of accepting marketing emails. I don't appear to have received the email so I either opted out (and it worked) or I didn't fit their profile. G.

I received one of these e-mails too and deleted it. However, it wasn't for model railway insurance, but for car, van or motorbike insurance. That said, I guess that the majority who can afford a model railway, can afford a car or motorcycle. As has been said, if you are not interested, either delete or unsubscribe from future marketing. Adams442T
This is all part of the insidious pattern which modern life is sliding into. It started with Edward Bernays, the nephew of Sigmund Freud, who first devised the system of using psychoanalysis to shape consumer culture. Often referred to as 'The Father of Public Relations', his deliberate manipulations of the American public, "because they can't be trusted with Democracy" has led to our present sorry state. There are some interesting documentaries available to watch free online, called 'The Century of the Self' by Adam Curtis. Over 4 parts it outlines just how society has been manipulated since the 20's to think, react and buy. Everything from consumer goods to politicians crap! RJS1977
I received one of these e-mails too and deleted it. However, it wasn't for model railway insurance, but for car, van or motorbike insurance. Yes, I was quite interested when I saw the subject line as the cost of insuring my exhibition has gone up considerably in the last few years. So quite disappointed to see it was about insuring cars and motorbikes - neither of which I own or have any intention of so doing.
RMweb Gold bourneagain Posted May 18, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 18, 2016 I also got the email, but I cancelled my subscription over 2 years ago, so it has nothing to do with whether you currently agreed or not to receive these emails.

Dungrange
Well, I received another e-mail on Monday offering a free magazine if I get a quote for vehicle insurance: one of the choices being Model Rail. Terms and conditions are at https://www.mustard.co.uk/offers-promotions/ I haven't got a quote to say whether or not they are competitive.
dibber25
This is not "Model Rail selling insurance" but an insurance company offering a range of Bauer magazines as free gifts.
davefrk
This is not "Model Rail selling insurance" but an insurance company offering a range of Bauer magazines as free gifts. As I understand it it is 'Bauer Media' who are expanding their portfolio with more magazines, radio stations and now an insurance comparison site. ''Cover yourself with Mustard' is the tag line, who I wonder thought that one up and it's all over their radio stations with this damn advert, rather annoying. rue_d_etropal
I would not surprise me to see on this forum, or other similar ones, someone asking for advice about insuring their layout. Thing is, it might be annoying, but without advertising we would not know what was out there. Emails I can just ignore. If they look interesting they might get stored away, otherwise they just get deleted. Far more annoying are junk phonecalls as they are less easy to ignore, unless you have some way of identifying them. For all those who grumble because they are certain they have not ticked the box. well, sometimes mistakes are made, and wrong field name checked in the programs used to select data. I did it once, as the two field names were very similar. Only found out because someone grumbled about being called. We all can make mistakes, and there is less checking/testing in it these one off programs. Something else far more annoying is when advertising bumph is included with magazine, bought in a shop, and as a result the magazine has to be bagged. Thing about any marketing, is that for every feedback, there are probably a lot more ignores, and it is very difficult to measure those, unless you assume it is the difference between total and feedback number. jonny777
Was the insurance offered good value or did everyone just delete it? I don't know, but I visited the Uswitch site the other day and entered my vehicle details. etc., and it told me I could save £200 on my yearly premium with Hastings Direct rather than Saga (who I have been insured with these past few years), so I am in the process of switching. I phoned Saga but they said they were not able to match the Hastings quote. Yes, it can be a faff but I use these switching sites regularly now to try and save some money. The new company may bump up my premium next year, but if so I will go somewhere else.

Kenton
I didn't get an email and am currently looking to renew my car insurance - I could be jealous - but I am not as the word "insurance" is one of my spam filters along with some pharmaceutical products and many other terms. But I would be far more annoyed at any magazine I subscribed to passing on / selling my email address to some third party. I have many email addresses and use them to identify the source of an email eg. model-rail@i_am_spamming_you.trapped.net (useful if you have your own mail server)
Dungrange
It would appear that in this case Model Rail have not sold any details to a third party as Model Rail Magazine and Mustard Insurance are both part of the Bauer group of companies. Therefore whether or not anyone ticked a box to opt out of receiving offers from third parties is irrelevant as there is normally a separate box to opt out of special offers from Bauer Media. I know that I am less likely to tick that box than one from third parties, which would explain why I have received these e-mails. However, as others have said, they are easy to delete. Thank you for making that point. It is actually another company within Bauer which is offering the insurance service. Model Rail is not selling insurance - we have quite enough to do producing model railway magazines! (CJL)
GordonC
I've just received the same rubbish. I did not ever select anything to opt in to receive marketing rubbish and it if was 'opt-out' I certainly would have done. I'm perfectly capable of finding car insurance quotes myself
RMweb Gold 2mmMark Posted October 31, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 31, 2016 I saw the title of this thread and it conjured up a couple of large gentlemen in loud pinstripe suits and fedora hats touring exhibitions saying "nice layout squire, you wouldn't want it to 'ave an accident, would you? 'ow about taking out some model rail insurance like?
caradoc
I received the same e-mail today; Read it, decided I didn't want it and deleted it, which took about 20 seconds. I also received a letter from the Co-Op today offering me insurance which again I don't require, this took me longer to dispose of than the e-mail. Neither made me hot under the collar or bust a blood vessel.
