LNER smokebox door variations in 4mm kits

Recommended Posts

im currently in the process of building a north eastern kits J73 in 4mm scale, my own personal preference is in the BR period and I find a lot of the kits on the market don't tend to cover the variations in smoke box doors. am I the only one to have found this? I cant fault Arthurs kit as its very good and he is very helpful with and questions or need ive had but his kits are generally geared up for modelling the locos in their earlier states. and with other kits too ive found that not all the variations are covered. my wish has been to build my model with the final more curved variation of the smokebox door but I havnt been able to find anyone who does a casting. so because of that I asked my boss if I could fiddle with my machine at work in my own time and make my own and these are the results from todays efforts.

has anyone else had similar issues with being able to do all of the variations in kits?

My range covers most of the post 1900 NER smokebox doors starting with the smallest on the J71/J72 through those on 4' 3", 4' 6" and 5' 0" boilers. It does include one LNER profile door for 5'0" (D20 & A6). More of these replacement doors will be added when the Q7 comes into production. Not all of these later doors had visible rivets and indeed some of the NER doors acquired mushrom rivets in their later days.

managed to get my casting pattern finished that will suit j21,j25,j73,j77,n8/9 and n10. that's what I can think of off the top of my head. maybe not the best pattern ever but im quite pleased to say its the first ive ever done. lets just hope it casts well!
