RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted April 28, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 28, 2016 Good afternoon. To cut a long story short I need some special strippers of wire. Over three weeks ago I ordered some wire strippers that 'bite a chunk' out of wire rather than the usual sheath strippers and despite having been told that it was in the post and again a replacement was in the post when the first one got 'lost', they have never arrived. So *** those and I wondered if anyone had a recommendation for an inexpensive item suitable for doing layout wiring (especially BUS size wire) and if so, where did you get it. Yes, I know I can use a knife etc. but I thought a tool would be safer (and was only going to be £5). Many thanks and sorry to disappoint after the title led you to this boring carp. RMweb Gold Mick Bonwick Posted April 28, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 28, 2016 I've been using one of these for years. Is there a branch of Maplins near you in case your order goes missing? http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/rolson-automatic-wire-stripper-n86bw Works for all the wiring I've used in layouts, from single strand bell wire to 32/0.2 for bus wire. Those are the ones. Thanks matey. Maplins in 36A. I need to go there really as they sell loads of good stuff including some interesting WAGO lever wire connectors I was looking at recently. I think a bus trip to Donny is in order and then a shortish walkabout, so it needs to be fine! Phil

RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted April 28, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted April 28, 2016 Hi matey, did you ever get them ? Yours Mr. W.I. Red Nope. The supplier just kept saying (by automated response email through Amazon) that Royal Mail must have lost them and would I want a replacement or refund. I wasn't confident when the email was not grammatically 'strong' and the spelling was poor. As they used Royal Mail I presume they were UK based? Off to Maplins I think, where no doubt I shall spend too much on other interesting gadgets that I don't really need. Phil

RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted April 28, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 28, 2016 I got a set for Xmas, pressie from the kids - bl**dy right-handed things, pain to use, but they do work on wire ends - not tried mid-wire.

P I've just spoken to Walter the Softy and he said it was Gnipper, son of Gnasher . Not sure if we carry on like this it'll get too near the bone ! RMweb Premium Ian J. Posted April 28, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 28, 2016 I've got one of these plasplug ones stuck in storage: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Plasplug-Hws827-Handy-Wire-Stripper/dp/B0001P0HWU/ref=sr_1_18?s=diy&ie=UTF8&qid=1461868027&sr=1-18&keywords=wire+stripper I find it works quite well, though being plastic and 'cheap' I don't expect it to last long, and I can sometimes set it a bit too aggressive and end up with the wire cut into. Rabs
Personally, I prefer the pistol type, such as http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/cable-strippers/0613044/ I have a pair of each type and I find that these tend to do a neater job and you can consistently strip the same length because there is an adjustable end stop inside them. I'm sure you can get the same type cheaper, RS tend to be expensive. I'd go for one with a metal handle, it will last much longer.
