Acton Parkway (18ft by 8ft) Nathan Bridge

Acton Parkway is an imaginary through station based on the West Coast Mainline south west of Manchester. It’s a new station with car parking for commuters and shoppers who journey to Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham. The current scene is depicted with both passenger and freight. The viewing area consists of three 4ft boxes made from MDF and these stand on workbench trestles. The fiddle-yard is constructed from MDF and chipboard and is self supporting. Control of both locomotives and points is DCC using the Lenz system some of the locos are sound. The overhead wire is not operational and is constructed by soldering piano wire lengths together and super-glued to the Dapol masts. Some of the buildings are modified Pikestuff kits with the remainder being scratch built using Unit Models accessories. The stock is a mixture of the major suppliers of ready built rolling stock and most items have been weathered.

Amalgamated Wagon Works 0 gauge (10ft by ?ft) Ray Lord (Replacing Grime Street)

Many moons ago some Rochdale club members built Amalgamated Wagon. This was a small 7mm shunting plank based on a fictitious wagon works and saw a few shows in the North West. Then interest then waned and for a good few years the layout languished in a barn in Sowerby. Earlier this year club member Ben Lord rescued it and took it home with a view to making it exhibitable again. He’s made a few alterations, and is thinking of extending it to some exchange sidings. 

Axmouth 00 (12ft by 2ft) Steve Saxby

Axmouth is the result of a holiday in Devon and researching the network of ex-LSWR/SR lines in the east of the county. Although BR-Blue modellers, an SR liveried Hornby M7 was purchased so a layout was needed to run it on. Seaton offered good operating potential with main platform, bay, engine shed and goods yard. This was also am interesting location alongside the river. However, rather than simply follow this plan, we have made Axmouth a 'mirror-image' to place it on the opposite bank. The name Axmouth was chosen as it sounds railway-like and the river it is next to is the Axe. Other SR stock was added to the fleet so the setting for Axmouth is in the late-1930's. To fit the Seaton plan needed to be compressed as the real thing could accommodate long holiday trains but the main platform can still take a three coach branch train plus a T9. The buildings are from the Bachmann 'Shillingstone' range and add nicely to the SR country feel. We both have an interest in SR EMU's so Axmouth has been given 3rd rail but just into the bay - this is part of an SR test for rural electrification. Had the Second World War not intervened, much more of the ex-SR lines would have been electrified. Anyway it is an excuse to run the superb Hornby 2-Bil. Track is Peco Code 75 for speed of construction, and although committed DCC enthusiasts, Axmouth is DC.

Black Road (8 ft by 6ft) Live steam Brian Cayton

My main interest in the model railway field lies in designing and making fine scale live-steam locomotives in the smaller gauges from 9mm to 0 gauge.
Several years ago I devised a way of making remotely controllable small industrial locos on gauge 0 (7mm scale) which are capable of performing shunting operations in a fairly confined space. The prototype Avonside B3 0-6-0 can be seen on the layout.
I made a further 4 small locos two of which are not strictly speaking industrials but are NER H2 0-6-6 tanks which all perform very well.
The locos are gas fired and are powered by a very small twin cylinder oscillating engine located between the frames and geared to the axle usually at 3:1 ration. They are controlled by a hand held switch which feeds 12V dc to the rails and then to a purpose designed servo operated a steam valve on the locos.
The success of the locos has been such that it has encouraged me to make a presentable layout on which they could perform shunting operations as well as haul trains.
In order that I can plausibly run passenger as well as goods trains it seemed sensible for the layout to represent a fictitious preserved industrial railway on the lines of Tanfield, Beamish or Middleton. The Black Road is the name from a long gone colliery railway in Leeds close to where I lived as a child. The layout very compact and fits into a small hatchback type car. Please feel free to ask any questions as I enjoy talking about steam engines as much as I enjoy making them.

Burghead N (16ft by 2ft) Bob Rowlands Liverpool

Based on the Inverness and Aberdeen Railway branch which reached the village of Burghead in 1862. It was the only branch line to have been opened before the Highland Railway was formed. In 1892 the branch was extended to Hopeman and the harbour station was replaced by new station at Burghead. The Burghead and Hopeman branch closed to passengers in 1931 but grain to the maltings continued well into the 1990s. In the model the harbour station is open for passengers. Freight traffic comprises of fish traffic, coal, oil, timber, fertiliser traffic for the factory and materials for the North Sea oil explorations, which were just starting. The harbour was used by fishing boats, pleasure craft, timber from the Baltic and the new oil industry supply boats. I have modelled the period 1960—1970 so that I can use steam and diesel locomotives. I have used N Gauge Fine scale track, ballasted and weathered. The scenery is on a foam board base. Most of the buildings are scratch built and are made from card and paper. The locomotives are from Dapol and Grafar. Rolling stock are a mixture of kits and ready to run, nearly all are weathered. The ships in the harbour are of types found operating around Scotland are mainly scratch built from card and plastic. I have also built some ships from resin kits.

Goathland 00 (12ft by 9ft) Scarborough MRC

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is regarded as one of the country`s premier heritage railways, and Goathland is its most recognisable station, thanks to the filming of Heartbeat (Aidensfield), Harry Potter (Hogsmeade) and Simply Red's music video (Holding back the years). This iconic station has been faithfully reproduced. Even the current station master is impressed (see layout photo section). Check out the well-known characters from the TV series - you'll see Claude Greengrass in trouble yet again with the police. 

The trains are operated prototypically, with those approaching from Whitby and Grosmont working hard up the 1:49 gradient and appearing under the three-arch bridge at Darnholme. Once in the station, the train then awaits the arrival of the north bound train before leaving in the Pickering direction, passing under the single lane road bridge and around the corner to Fen Bog and beyond.

 Hornby inform us that this new layout is one of the first on the 2015 exhibition scene powered by their 'eLink' operating system. Goathland's computerised DCC system is used in conjunction with iPads (used as remote controllers). Technology is really taking our hobby forward in the 21st Century: computerisation, sound, working semaphore signals and scenic animation.
As an exhibition layout, it needed to be realistic yet manageable and sectionalised. It was immediately evident that a great deal of space was needed, but as the only room available for construction was 12ft by 8ft, this set the maximum size possible. Frequently heard words during design and construction were 'compromise' and 'make it smaller'. But even with these constraints, we hope that we have provided you with an acceptable representation of the station. Goathland is modelled in OO gauge, having a 4m x 3m operating footprint.

Fictitious overhead electrified Main Line with passing loops, on-scene marshalling of industry traffic (arriving/ departing) and assumed off scene industry accessed via a tunnel. During an exhibition, the passenger and freight stock is rotated such that for the viewing public the era's pass as the sequence of movements are run. 
Features prototypical passenger and freight trains, fully working 3 aspect signalling system for the main line, including route indicators and ground signals for passing loops and industry sidings.
OHLE masts depict the electrified lines.
During an weekend passenger and freight stock is rotated such that for the viewing public the Eras pass as the sequence of movements are run. Rolling stock includes a wide range of modified RTR and kit built models.

Johnston Harbour (20ft by 8ft) Harrogate MRG

A fictional town, somewhere in the East Midlands, on the border of British Railways Eastern and London Midland operating regions. The setting is the mid 1960's, BR's modernisation era, when steam was being phased out to be replaced by diesel traction. The modernisation era allows a variety of steam and diesel locomotives from member’s collections to be operated with both passenger and goods trains. The layout features a mainline station with goods yard, industrial and residential areas along with a small park.''

New Bryford (18ft by 10ft) Nick Bryan and Peter Taylor Blackburn

New Bryford had previously been exhibited in the mid/late 1990’s and after a change of ownership it has returned to the original builder and couple of fellow modellers. It has been extensively refurbished including a new, deeper backscene and conversion to Digital Command Control (DCC) operation via a Lenz 100 system. It portrays the railway scene within the Manchester/Wigan/Bolton area in the last 5-6 years. Passenger traffic is varied from humble Northern Rail DMU’s to Voyagers on Anglo-Scottish duty and the occasional Pendolino drag diverted from the West Coast main line. Railtours often bring unusual motive power to the area including steam locos en-route to tackling the famous Settle-Carlisle or Shap routes. Freight is equally varied in the region, with DB Schenker, Freightliner, Direct Rail Services and Colas Rail all having regular workings through New Bryford. To add extra colour, Network Rail test trains also feature. The DCC system enables us to control each item individually including lights and sound. Much of the stock is modified/repainted/renumbered from ready-to-run items from all the major manufacturers. There are a few kit and scratchbuilt items to add further variety. Peco Code 75 track is used in the scenic section and Code 100 in the storage yards (only because I had some spare when originally built!) with Peco point motors – all have been fitted with extra switches to improve electrical reliability. Please feel free to ask any questions about the layout and its’ rolling stock.

North Hetton Colliery Gauge 1 ( 12ft by  3ft) Colin Salmond

North Hetton Colliery closed in 1935 but I have assumed that it re-opened during the Second World War and stayed open until the 1950’s. The model, more a working diorama, is purely fictitious and incorporates many features and buildings that were typical of the area. The layouts main feature is a day and night sequence which makes viewing the interiors of the buildings much easier. I am hoping to incorporate a coal loading feature using a working conveyor. The layout was designed full size, which enabled most of the buildings to be built before any construction of baseboards. The buildings have taken about one year to construct the baseboards and track work about two months. The track work is hand built using code 180 rail and slide on plastic chairs, glued to wooden sleepers. Motive power is provided by a scratch built diesel shunter. The wagons are also hand built using card for the bodies and commercially available parts for the under frames. I have tried to include as many different types of hopper wagons as possible. I hope that this layout shows that it is possible to have a large scale layout, with all its advantages, in a very small space. Oxenhope 0 (38ft by 3ft) BMRC

Penny Lane 0 (12ft by 7ft) Richard and Sue Andrews

A small 0 gauge layout based on 1930’s GWR. It consists of a small board and fiddle yard and features automatic couplings.

Republic Steel Z (5ft by 3ft) Mardy MRC

Republic Steel' and represents the massive steelworks in Cleveland that stretched along the 'Cuyahoga Flats' on Lake Erie. DCC controlled and featuring 3d printed iron ore hoppers and iron ladle cars. Central to the layout is a blast furnace with its associated high line and a giant rolling mill turning the raw product into strip and slab products. The key point to the layout is that Steelworks look pretty much the same the world over. 'Republic steel' will eventually connect to one of my other layouts “Cuyahoga” to represent an American works but will also feature on the new British layout 'Tapton Junction' as it nears completion.

Rose Cove  0-16.5 (4ft but 2ft) Dave Burrows

The Village 1918 009 (4ft by 2ft)  WW1 layout Roy Hurst Leeds

The Village – 1918 – behind the British lines. Narrow gauge railways played a crucial part in the First World War and were used by all the combatants on the Western Front. They enabled the transportation of men, materials and ammunition close to the front much more quickly and efficiently than by motor vehicles or horses. They were often laid directly on the ground with minimum surface preparation and designed to be easily relocated. The diorama is inspired by pictures in the book – Narrow Gauge at War – published by Plateway Press in 1996. The village is Lieven– Agrees in Belgium but the photograph could have been taken in many villages all along the Western Front. A single line of track passes through a ruined village; some buildings are still on fire; a plume of smoke hangs in the air and the sound of artillery and machine gun fire can be heard.

Titheridge Junction N (14ft by 8ft) BMRC (see layouts page) Yorkton 00 (18ft by 10ft)

The layout has 2 sets of rolling stock which allows different stock on each day. It is a fictitious location in the Midlands which represents the BR blue and sectorisation period. The location is based on a medium sized station with a depot and fuelling point set in a small town with busy passenger and freight services to keep interest. The locomotives and rolling stock are from the major manufacturers (Bachmann, Hornby and Heljan), Classes 03 – 60 while the odd DMU can also be seen. There is also the chance to see a rare visitor to the non electrified line, a Class 85. All the scenery and buildings are all off the shelf items from Bachmann, Hornby, Metcalfe Models and Woodland Scenics.  Zweiberg HO (12ft by 2ft)  Roger epps

Zweiberg is a small community at the head of a valley in the Zurich area. Commuter trains run to Zurich and beyond, and the occasional locomotive hauled train appears. Freight services see vans to the distribution area, and gondolas to the sugar beet loader. Track is Peco code 75 and the layout is DCC controlled using a Roco Z21 system. Buildings and scenery are from the many continental kits manufacturers. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Thanks for posting the info on this show.  Your layout is not my area of interest unfortunately, but seeing live steam and Z gauge persuaded me to attend and very nice it was too.  I asked about you on Newbryford, but you had gone for more stock.  I also asked if the yellow sports car in the car park was yours!

 

Anyway some pictures of the show.  0 gauge live steam, N gauge, Z gauge, one 00 I think, N Gauge live steam!  You may just be able to see steam escaping from the safety valve on one of the 0 gauge locos.  Very yellow lighting where layouts did not have their own lighting rig.
