EddieB
This is a shameless cross posting from elsewhere, but merely passing on a request to show solidarity with Greek railfans who have launched a petition to save and restore regular passenger and tourist services on the Peloponnese system. Anyone who has visited will be aware of the beauty and tourist potential of these lines, which are now being left disused and overgrown. To date most of the support for the petition has come from within Greece itself. For the international community of railway enthusiasts to get behind the petition would be a real boost. The petition can be found here: http://www.amnizia.org/vote/ (English translation when you scroll down). The Peleponse area is beautiful, so anything to keep this system going is worthwhile. Rob
Allegheny1600
Thanks Eddie for bring this to attention. Duly signed and shared on facebook, where I have quite a few Peloponnese friends, lets see how many will sign. It's always been such a crying shame that no sooner had most of these lines been refurbished than all services were withdrawn. I was in Tripoli just at the time and was rebuffed when I asked to take some photos of the station and area - it seems the officials there were highly embarrassed about the whole thing. Later, I heard there was a problem with the wheels on the rolling stock? I know there was way too much corruption going on in high places but it did seem like cutting your nose off to spite your face. Cheers, John.
