Journey from Chirk to Cam & Dursley (SW of Gloucester) - Interesting Freight?

Dear All,

This Thursday, 19th May, I'm embarking on a train journey from Chirk to Cam & Dursley via changes at Shrewsbury, Birmingham NS and Cheltenham Spa and was wondering if there are many interesting freight locations or freight activity that I may see on the way?

I know about the Kronospan siding at Chirk and the (virtually) unused Coton Hill yard at Shrewsbury, but apart from that I'm a bit out of touch with current freight activity - hence the question...

Many thanks as always for any help.

I thought I'd take a look at an old copy of Baker to see what you might have seen in busier times. This is from my 1984 edition:-

Gobowen- coal yard and Oswestry branch

Whittington- BP depot

Shrewsbury- Coton Hill yard and Castle Foregate goods

Oakengates- Tunnel Cement

Wolverhampton- steel terminal and BOC terminal

Then, South Staffs wagon repairs and West Midlands Gas (LPG), followed by Gulf Albion

After BNS, there was the MAT car terminal at King's Norton, followed by BL Longbridge, and the BL Foundry at Crofton Hackett.

Bromsgrove- Hallen Oil (formerly GATX) terminal.

Ashchurch MoD

Cheltenham- Coal concentration depot

Gloucester- fertiliser and cement terminals, wagon works, RAF Quedgley and Dowmac sleeper works.

Stonehouse - another CCD

You'd have trouble getting off at Cam & Dursley, though, as the station had yet to reopen.

if your getting on in chirk you wont see the log sidings they are north of the station

however have a look at chirk station environs, you will see the old glyn valley railway bridge hole over on the other platform, also after the station you will go through a tunnel, the line used to go over there to a wharf, on the left, just below the railway you will see a nice aquaduct (the border between england and wales)

gobowen, the branch to oswestry goes off to the right, the line climbs and goes to the left, it then straightens out and after about a mile you will see a bridge abutment which used to be the cambrian to whitchurch

then after another mile or so on the right, whittington oil terminal (OOU but still connected), not much else until you drop into shrewsbury where on the right you will see the old coton hill box, now a house

shrewsbury, obviously a lot to see there railway wise

away towards wolves, not much railway wise, just before wellington you may make out where the line used to come in from market drayton on the left and after wellington where the line to donnington diverges

after telford the line to ironbridge comes in from the right

cosford, raf museum on the right, you may see some plane tails through the trees, look out for the air ambulance too

oxley, carriage sidings, bith sides but nothing really parked there in the day, BR blue 08 resident there though so you may see that

wolves, not a lot there, the low level station is visible from the station, then after the station, the steel terminal is on the left, you may also see trams running down the road just past there

nowt much of interest between there and brum really, the line to stourbridge comes in from the left and at soho the line to perry barr goes off to the left, soho emu depot is on the right and there is a resident 08 in there too, freshly painted in railfreight grey livery (08805 i think)

new street, worth a look at the new atrium if you have time, actually quite impressive

as for the next leg, cant help you with that bit

Thanks for the detailed reply Jim! We've got 40 minutes at New Street so we'll have a look round there.

Many thanks again for all the replies.
