keidal
Can anyone please point me in the direction of a railway magazine which might have a scale drawing of the LMS [ ex Highland Railway ] "Barney" 0-6-0 goods loco, by Drummond ? The only drawing that I have is a very small scale side elevation of the loco in "The History of Highland Locomotives" and I suspect that the 5' 0" diameter driving wheel centres were 7' 3" + 9' 0". It was never published in the Railway Modeller magazine. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Keith
keidal
I now believe that the correct wheel centres are 7' 6" + 9' 0"
Ian Kirk
Hi, Definitely 7ft 6in + 9ft. The drawing I have is in "A history of Highland locomotives" Peter Taplow and is the Eddie Bellas drawing. This shows the first version with bogie tender. The 6 wheel tenders were the same as the Small Ben, I think some of the bogie tenders were swopped over. I must have another drawing somewhere as there was the possibility of producing patterns which would have given Sutherland Casters the possibility of producing the Barney as well as the Ben - which had just come out. (quite a lot of the Ben patterns could have been used but the Barney kit did not go ahead) The Ben kit ended up with Nu Cast. I did some pattern making for Sutherland Casters when their regular pattern maker was injured in a motor cycle accident late 70s early 80s which was a long time before Taplow's book came out so the drawings I got then must have been different. Sorry not have answered your question about Magazine - I am not aware of one and I realise that buying an expensive book (even if still in print) for one drawing is a bit much. best wishes, Ian
keidal
Thank you Ian for this information. I have a copy of "A History of Highland Locomotives" but by M C Allchin [1947] in which there are many drawings of HR locos, including the Barney 0-6-0 but it doesn't show the tenders. The drawings are excellent but unfortunately only a side elevation is shown [without a tender] and probably drawn to about 3 mm scale size. They are obviously reduced from bigger drawings. The Barney and the Small Ben locos apparently share the same boiler and no doubt other items. Castings for this loco [and other HR locos] are I believe, available from L G Miniatures. Best wishes to all, Keith

Ben Alder
Skinley did a 4mm drawing of this engine - I have a copy if it is of any use.
keidal
Thank you everyone for your interest and assistance. I have bought on eBay for £2.95, a copy of " A History of Highland Locomotives" by Peter Tatlow, book no. ISN 0 86093 0483 and published by the Oxford Railway Publishing Co . This book is a fantastic collection of drawings and photographs of the HR locos, including of course the Barney 0-6-0 goods loco and in great detail. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the Highland Railway, if only for the photographs and the technical information - it is superb ! It was first published in 1947 and my copy is the revised and extended edition dated 1979, when it cost £5.95. What a bargain ! Keith

It is a list of drawings from many magazines. I have a copy, but its in storage, so cannot look it up!
Portchullin Tatty
Keith Coming to this topic late, sorry! Probably the best drawing of a Barney is in my father's book and was by Eddie Bellas. It was also in the Constructor. Both have been pointed to by others. The other book to mention, which others haven't, is Cormack & Stevenson's book Highland Railway Locomotives Vol 2. It doesn't have a drawing but is the best history of what happened to the locos and what detail differences they had. They swapped tenders over their life, tenders were also extended plus a host of other detail changes. Jidenco/Falcon brass did an etched kit but this is not presently available. Some pictures of my father's Barney are on my Highland Miscellany thread & blog (see links below)
