Chameleon
I'm planning on building/detailing 44871 and was wondering which of the current crop of Hornby B5s would match the details and variations of this loco? I'm going to use a brass masters detailing kit and fit DCC sounds and possibly a smoke unit to make the best B5 I can. I have seen the model of it by Hornby but it is nearly impossible to get hold of especially at any sort of sensible price as it was a special edition. I'm not to fussed about renumbering it so an equivalent loco would do.

johnd
Hunt for R2686B. It was brought out by Hornby about 5-6 years ago. It was weathered as well if my memory is right.

Chameleon
Yes I know. With a price to match. If I can find one. That's why I'm looking for an equivalent model that I don't have to add or remove much from, with the correct lining, preferably unweathered as I will do my own. Edit: I re-read your first post.. you do want DCC sound, so 44875 (R2804XS) is your best option.. all you need do is renumber ( and if representing it as is today, add modern warning flashes, plus the GSMR/TPWS gubbins, air brakes, oversized cylinder (replacing the tender scoop) and speedo). (deleted half my remaining post below to reflect update). Hornby did 44932, lined as preserved. It also has modern warning flashes. This could be a good starting point, same boiler /top feed, and has welded tender, though if you want the 1950s logo, look for a tender off 45253 or 44668. (These aren't good candidates for the loco however..different boilers). 44908 isn't a bad start either, but has a riveted tender. You could always go for 44875.. But it's a dcc sound version but it's pretty much right for what you want..just expensive to start with, unless sound is your thing (if not..it's a swap of loco chassis and tender chassis as it comes with plug between loco and tender, unlike most others, so in order to sell off the unwanted tender speaker and chip and, you'd need another 5 to swap from). robmcg
Ramsay's Guide by Pat Hammond is a good source of info if you can get one. It will show lined/unlined and boiler type, also emblem, and sometimes riveted/unriveted tender and other subtleties. I'm on moderator watch so cannot give quick answers from NZ. Is this what you are after? I think 44762 and 45253 are both close, the former was factory weathered Best of luck, hours of browsing Ebay might bring some reward! Cheers oops 44762 doesn't qualify, wrong top feed position.
Chameleon
I'm not fussed for sound fitted as I'm most likely to get a loksound 4 with B5 sounds from locoman via DC kits when they release the sound version for the B5.

Many buy the set for the extra coaches so the loco is a tad cheaper, Unboxed. Take this, renumber and re-logo the tender your pretty much at a passable example. Chameleon
Sounds like just what I'm after. Thanks for that. I see Rails have a sound fitted 44871 for £219. Not cheap and no details of what sound is fitted (I believe the original Hornby one is only DCC ready?)

Not cheap and no details of what sound is fitted (I believe the original Hornby one is only DCC ready?) Correct....it was. However,if you have DCC ( or even if you don't,because Hornby sound chip locos do actually work on dc only ! ) why not e mail them to find out and make them an offer? You might be surprised .Give it a try.

Just had a look at this on eBay.Looks good and box is ok.Doubt if it's had much wear.Rails give you a guarantee anyway.I have never had a problem with them with stuff bought on eBay. If you are tempted, offer £185 & see what happens...they may accept or make a counter offer. The rest is down to you.
