Pete the Elaner
I have some decoders in use for function only & was wondering about enabling them for reading CVs. Could I get away with a resistor where the motor should be or would I need something more reactive?
Edwin_m
I've not done this with a motor decoder but have with an unused function on a function decoder. A resistor should be OK but you will need to consider the power being dissipated. I think you need a resistor of about 100 ohms, which will be dissipating well over 1 watt with 12 volts across it. So you will either need a high-power resistor or to change the CVs so the motor terminals are never energised during normal running. Setting the maximum speed CV to zero ought to do this, but best to read the manual closely and check it with a meter.
Nigelcliffe
A safer option than changing the speed settings would be to use the resistor only during programming read actions (ie. only on the programming track). Then disconnect the resistor when running on the layout.
