Dear Chaps(esses)

Im keen to make a kit of a BR class 11 shunter/trip loco (0-6-0)  but am having difficulty finding a kit manufacturer of one.  If any of you good folk can point me in the right direction id be very grateful. 8)

Scale/Gauge??

The LMS 350hp twin-motor deiesel-electric shunter was developed into the BR Class 08. So that might be a logical(ish) starting point bearing in mind the following:

Class 11 had 4' 0.5" wheels (08s had 4'6") - so you'll need replacement (smaller) wheelsets, with all the fun that involves around flycranks and the quartering thereof.

Class 11 had only the 2 (longer) battery boxes centrally on the footplate, so you'll need to remove/replace the boxes on the 08 model.

Class11 had a subtly different cab roof profile (lower) than the 08.

Dear Cloggy

What an excellent reply and help!  I am fairly handy with finescale modelling in 7 and 4mm scales so I cant see too big an issue with any 08 alterations.   I just fancied making a kit you see, without too much extra work... showing my age now.

Thanks again for help

To add to my mate Cloggydog's list,

Lower running plate, buffers appear higher up on buffer beam, the buffer beam is lower because of the smaller wheels and lower running plate.

Higher cab sides, hence the shallower cab roof profile.

Squared off bottoms to cab front windows.

Only 2 lights, one red and one white each end. Exception being some later built ones being rebuilt with four headcode lights but using a different conduit run than on a BR 350.

All engine room doors are different sizes to a BR 350.

Cab door handrails have handrail knobs, the hand rail is not curved at the ends. Again some ER machines had 08 type cab handrails at a later date.

Only one radiator filler pipe on most machines after the top filler was removed.

Foot steps are shorter, both front and cab.

No windscreen wipers.

In fact more visual differences than between a GWR Saint and a GWR Grange.

Having looked at converting a RTR BR 350 into a LMS one, by the time the frame and running gear has be changed (not too sure how easy it would be to re-wheel either a Bachy or Hornby 08) , a new cab made, new engine room sides, battery boxes etc. All I would be left with was the engine room roof, the generator grills, radiator and fuel tanks. Scratchbuilding was chosen and I am going to make two, trouble is I have two sets of driving wheels and outside crank axles, loads of brass for the frames, a pile of plastic card, two motors and two gear boxes, but no action as yet.

It is odd that a class of over 100 locos has never been made as a RTR model or a kit, especially as the GWR six are identical, and we all know anything GWR sells.

Just think if a manufacturer did do a LMS 350 how long before someone was to take the body and mate it with a BR 350 chassis to make a SR 350, it wouldn't be hard to make some box-pox inserts for the wheels.

I believe that some 11s were upgraded two four marker lights and had wipers fitted.

The 11 on the North Norfolk has these features and were not added in preservation

Hi Russ

You are right, I was working from memory not my books or photos.

Many thanks Clive for your very helpful reply too.  I have 'Modern Locos Illustrated' shunter edition so will give it all a close examination.

Cheers

Stuart

Hi Stuart

If you are considering making a Class 11, then it might be worth getting hold of LMS Locomotive Profiles No12, The Diesel-Electric Shunters by David Hunt and John Jennison, published by Wild Swan ISBN 978 1 905184 61 3.
