Can anybody tell me what the origin of the Knightwing LOCO1 diesel is - I seem to recall it was a German design, so I wondered what it's origins were - I am aware that the Knightwing range has some kits originally sold by other manufacturers such as the coal mine, which I think had it's origins with Heljan?

It is supposedly based on a Jung design, like this one http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5744/23475748935_ba0aae02a9_m.jpg but I don't think it is an exact replica of a particular loco.

Some of the road vehicle kits in the Knightwing range started out as Keilkraft/Amerang kits, don't know about the buildings in the range.  The loco kits were definitely Knightwing originals.

As far as I'm aware, I think it's based on a Jung RK20B.

What surprises me though is a kit of a German outline loco being offered in OO, rather than the HO more typical of mainland European outline models.

Saying that, it's still welcome (and I'd quite like to see both this one and the Sentinel kit in the shops in my part of the world some time soon - I'd also quite like to see that "cabbed + in cabbed" pair, but that's hoping too much).

While on the subject of wishful thinking, there is another German outline kit which could be nice in OO or British O - a small shunter, some of which actually found their way to the UK. I'm talking about the Köf ii.

I figured that as it wasn't British, it must have originated from another kit manufacturer, but as has been pointed out it is OO scale and not HO as I understand.

Hi Stu,

Why must it have originated with another kit manufacturer?

Whilst a good percentage of the Knightwing range did originate with other manufacturers, there are other things in the range that were commissioned by Knightwing.

This includes LOCO1.

One of the things that did happen when the commission was put in place, is that the designed/manufacturer has not used to correct prototype but the nearest they could find at a convenient location for them to work from.

This model and the containers are perfect examples of this situation.

In the case of the containers - If the designer/manufacturer had modelled the containers that they were sent details of accurately, then they would have been correct and there would be less need for the =C-Rail= range of British containers!

Instead they went looking for a container near the factory that seemed to be right and then made it worse by mixing up that containers details with what Knightwing had sent them and then scaling it to 1:72 instead of 1:76!.

Thanks

Thanks for the informative reply. I know that this kit has been 'bashed' by both standard and narrow gauge modellers so has been quite a popular model - I wonder how different things would have been if it had been based on a British prototype.

I know this is reviving an old thread but I have just bought one of the kits, is there a recommended chassis to use to motorise them?

A SPUD motor bogie perhaps.

ISTR that Branchlines did a chassis pack for it. Using a SPUD or Black Beetle. They definitely did for the Sentinel that Knightwing did.

Might be worth having a look in their catalogue. Send them an email and they'll send you lists.
