Bachmann F7A Project

Hi Folks

I've found this in my stash...

post-6924-0-60260300-1468076543_thumb.jpeg

...no idea when or where I bought it.  Anyway its one of the cheap DCC Sound fitted ones.

I plan to do my first US diesel detailing project on this loco, and turn it into a representation of this...

http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/pc/pc1832ads.jpg Penn Central 1832

From what I can see I need to add::

Nose side grab irons (one side only)

bonnet top grab irons

Cab roob handrails

Bodyside door handrails

New horns

MU cables

Coupler-cut bars

Exhaust stacks

New fuel tanks

I know next to nothing about US rolliing stock detailing parts so could someone point me in the right direction for the items in red?

Further, whilst Im happy with the sound I think I might have a little problem.  After a few seconds of running the sound seems to dim and sounds quite 'farty'.  would this be the speaker at fault?  Its a 25mm 8ohm chappie (I dont know much about sound at all)

All help gratefully received!

How can anyone possibly 'forget' they have an F-Unit in their collection??!!?? :D

I like the 'any color so long as it's black' livery choice.

Not sure about HO details these days but probably the usual suspects, Details West etc will be the best bet, from Model Junction, Slough.

And yes it's highly likely the grab irons up the side of the nose were only on the one side; seems the most typical application.

PS it's probably not new fuel tanks you need, but modifying the side valance over them, which was cut away in real life but models always seem to retain the full valance. As it's often also used to hold body & chassis together (like my old Atlas/Roco O scale F's) I must admit it's a modification I've chickened out of myself.

Fear the slippery slope of PC modeling!

The grabs were up one side of the nose only and then the ones on top of the nose - idea being to give men safe access to the windscreens to clean them.

Fuel tank - you'll have to look behind the skirting to see what sort of detail Bachmann provided you of the actual tank.

Note the 'skate' aka Sinclair antenna between the horns.  Details Associates in styrene; also others have done as nice etched bits.

The longer grab at the top of the side grabs is there to 'cradle' a ladder to keep it from sliding off.  Details Associates part I believe.

MU hoses on the front - I like the Details West white metal parts.  They bend and stay where you bend them.

Cut lever aka lift bar for the coupler - have never found a good source for this bit as a stand alone part.  Scratch build or scavenge from another model?

I see Bachmann left the long handholds off the side - good.  Easier than shaving off cast on bits.  I use 0.0125" phosphor bronze wire.

There should also be grabs up one side of the back end along with a back-up headlight.

Hope this helps a little...

There would have been a ladder rest grab on the turn of the nose on both sides, with the rest of the climbing grabs (including the bonnet top ones) only on the right side as mentioned above. There is also a stirrup below the cabside grabs (right side).

It also looks like that unit (ex-NYC) has a 36" dynamic brake fan rather than the 48" one on your model.

The headlight is a twin-bulb (horizontal) setup.

There is a socket cover on the left side of the nose approximately level with the headlight - when closed it is just a rectangular panel.

Before you spend too much time and energy on adding the details. I would suggest searching the internet for pictures of those engines. That is not an "old engine". It is an engine that the NS rebuilt for service pulling its officer specials. Rather than adding some details, you will be removing some. Door in the nose? Doesn't have one, was removed for grade crossing safety. Grab irons on nose front? Doesn't have them, no nose door, no need for grab irons. Grabs up one side? Doesn't have them, has one ladder bracket on each side. You will need to add recess ditch lights. That MU socket isn't level with the headlight, its level with the ditch lites just above the anti-climber.

The OP wants to backdate that to be the PC loco in the linked photo. No ditch lights in PC days and that series had a socket (MU?) high up on the left side of the nose (based on photos I have of others in that group).

Check out Walthers Diesel dress-up kit ,part #933-822 at around US$10. It was intended for the Athearn blue box F7, and should contain most of the parts you need.
