18B
Hi, was Inverness Diesel depot ever used for steam prior to diesels coming? I know half of it was a former wagon and carriage works? but was the two road corrugated sheeted building added for the diesels coming?
Bon Accord
The large complex to the North of the station was Lochgorm works and was used by the HR/LMS/BR for locomotive, carriage and wagon maintenance. Steam locomotives used a roundhouse which was to the East of the station, guarded by a very grand ornamental water tower. With the introduction of the various type 2 diesels and the elimination of steam locally, the roundhouse was closed and demolished in 1961 with the site itself now occupied by a shopping centre and supermarket. Until 1961 diesel locomotives shared facilities in the roundhouse, however a dedicated facility was then built for them adjacent to Lochgorm. I do believe steam locomotives continued to make occasional visits to Inverness for a few years afterwards, but there were no proper facilities for them. DavidBird
... the roundhouse was closed and demolished in 1961 with the site itself now occupied by a shopping centre and supermarket. The site of the turntable is clearly marked out in Morrisons' carpark...
