Colin Stewart
I am working on an ICG GP10 ( Carolina Coast 8311) which needs the large hoodside air filter housings. Does anyone have an HO part for this to hand that they could measure the dimensions for me so that I can fabricate parts for my large scale model? Thanks Colin Stewart
Glorious NSE
I'm not sure anyone makes that part in HO scale?
DelawareAndHudson
The Horst Paducah air filter? Detail Associates and Custom Finishing make them. Custom Finishing https://www.walthers.com/air-filtration-unit-horst DA part: https://www.walthers.com/air-filter-horst-paducah Walthers list both as OOS. I've heard that DA is difficult to get hold of. Minimal or no web presence. Custom Finishing at least has a web site: http://www.customfinishingmodels.com/ I spotted a couple of the DA Horst filters on Ebay. You could also try Des Plaines Hobbies. Not sure if they ship international or not but they're known for their depth of stock. http://www.desplaineshobbies.com/store/ Good luck. Glorious NSE
Those Horst parts are not the same as the filter boxes on the unit in question - even if it was the correct type the DA one is a fairly crude cast part designed to fit an overwide Athearn geep hood rather than a scale one so is precious little use to anyone these days.I've not come across a Custom Finishing one. The Horst parts are meant to replicate this type of filter box which sits over the hood top.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMD_GP8#/media/File:RNAPREX800.JPGThe unit in question has a separate box either side. Glorious NSE
PS - If anyone wants a dodgy old casting for an obsolete model that much, I have one in my bits box...don't pay to import one send me a PM!
w124bob
I assume you are not working in HO, guesstimate the length based on the hood doors and depth is about the same as the blank space on a standard GP9 for the shallower part. Non standard cab as well which makes the conversion more interesting, the origin of 8311 is UP according to http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/locolist.aspx?id=CLNA so it's had a serious rebuild at some point. DelawareAndHudson
My apologies. I ASSumed you were asking about the earlier style Horst. I think you may be on your own for the newer square style filter box. Jason C Indiana

It was part of IC(G)s Paducah rebuild program which included a whole bunch of Geep's bought secondhand (list includes B&O, C&O, DT&I, Frisco, DRGW, B&M and more...) as well as IC's own, not all got the faux EMD 2nd gen spartan cab. Some of the ex UP's, including this one were even B units before rebuild! (This was built as UP 188B)
Colin Stewart
Thanks everyone for the responses. I've done some digging and should be able to guestimate what I need. The loco in question is a USA trains GP9 that has a low short hood added and an SD45 cab. The prototype was rebuilt from a UP GP9B. I had originally planned to make it a GP11 and did most of the conversion work a couple of years ago before loosing interest. I dug out the project yesterday and decided that the CLNA 8311 as a GP10 would be a better option so have proceeded on that basis. Colin
CraigZ
Did somebody say CLNA 8311 Those filter housings were made by Details West; I have a pair around here someplace. They're two separate boxes that hang off the side of the hood so hood width is not critical.

Colin Stewart
Can we see photos of your ICG GP10? Its a very long way from looking pretty, but here you are. The cab is from an aristocraft SD45 and the trucks from an aristocraft GP40. The rest is recycled USA trains GP9. Next task is to finish the low short hood and battery boxes. It needs the hood side air filters and some work on the pilots to add the reinforcement plates. I need to swap out the fuel tank as well the stock USa trains one is too deep, I've already got a cut down one still to fit After that some loco specific details and a trip to the paint show in the next few weeks. Solid black with a white cab roof and I'll order decals from Stan Cedarleaf. Colin
CraigZ
Colin, I've a friend who works on the CLNA - if you want some more detail pix of 8311 PM your email address to forward to him.
Glorious NSE
Looks really good, you've caught the battery box mods as well which is another Paducah rebuild oddity!
JAMO
Thank you Colin! I understand you are working on a "BIG" scale model. Nice!
Colin Stewart
This project has been on and off over the years, Dyna cell air filter parts turned up on shapeways the other day so I've just ordered a set so it looks like it'll progress, might even finish it soon! Colin Stewart
A little more progress, the rooftop enforcing straps have gone and the hood latches on the doors directly below the air filter have now been moved to a lower position. Working on the roof top doors and additional exhaust stacks before moving back to the additional body side louvres. Its all slow progress but at it is progress! jasond
Hi Colin As a D&H man I thought a paducah was a growth on your foot. Anyway, I have an O Scale America Horst Air Filter detail part, pics attached. Is it the right one, shall I measure it, excuse the knee and lay your screen on its right side. Got to go now and light the bbq! Jason
Colin Stewart
Thanks Jason, I got the filters from shapeways, they are side mounted. and appear huge in 1/29.
