Dear All

I am trying to put together a Union Pacific freight train in 1:32nd scale to go with my 4000 class "Big Boy".  I have some reefers, box cars and oil tankers but am struggling to source a suitable caboose.  The only one I cab find is an MTH UP caboose ref 70-77007 which is unavailable.  I can buy an MTH New York Central caboose and respray it but, once again, am struggling to locate suitable decals / transfers.  The armour yellow paint doesn't appear to be a problem.

Does anyone know if a UP caboose in 1:32nd scale is available or where I can obtain decals?

Please note that I have listed the UP caboose as an interest on Ebay already.

Regards

Id be weary of repainting a NYC caboose.

The Central used specially modified cabooses with shallow cupolas to clear low tunnels along a majority of their routes. Also a reason why a NYC caboose is hard to repaint from anything else.

Why not scratchbuild one? Trucks shouldnt be hard to find, and Im sure you could find plans for the body and frame.

Apologies for being uneducated on such large scale models, but I would go for one with a centre Cupola such as the generic USA trains one instead of the generic MTH/RailKing one with with an end Cupola.

Many thanks for all your replies.  I've been out today playing trains so I thought a few photos might be in order:

Great fun!  The loco behaved impeccably only let down by the driver / fireman.  At moment it's set up for gas (butane) firing but can be easily converted to coal should I wish.

The problem with gauge 1 is that there is very little available.  Us gauge oners are not so lucky as those in the smaller scales.  I have looked at the USA Trains cabooses but, according to their website, they are all 1:29th scale and I want 1:32nd.  The MTH / Railking caboose is 1:32nd but the UP version is unavailable; I can, however, obtain a New York Central liveried version very easily.

Thank you to Colin Stewart for his suggestion of using Stan Cedarleaf for decals.  I may go down this road but am not fully convinced it's what I want to do.

I may buy the New York Central caboose and use that until a Union Pacific version is available.  As someone said to me today, "None of us would know whether it is right or wrong".  I can always try and sell the NYC caboose on Ebay or similar if a UP version does become available.

The MTH caboose is a Santa Fe prototype, and the UP paint job they've put on it is from the 70s, so i'd not get too worried about how wrong using a NYC one is...

Looks like Accucraft did sell a brass/steel model of UP's CA-1 class cabooses at some point which would be perfect if you did find one?

That's excellent information, many thanks.  I did wonder if the MTH caboose was actually correct for the UP, now I know.
