Performance of latest N gauge steam outline models

Recommended Posts

I am contemplating changing scales from 00 to N gauge. My only experience with N gauge was in the 1990's with British made Graham Farish. I found the diesel outline models performed well but the steam outline models were pretty hopeless! They either emulated Mallard in speed with no slower speeds possible or stuttered and stopped over any points.

The layout I am considering is a large terminus which means lots of points (electro-frog) and plenty of slow moving trains and shunting.

My query is, before I commit to offloading all my 00, are the current Bachmann GF and Dapol N gauge steam outline locos capable of performing at that level on that sort of layout? Or are they more suited to continuous run layouts?

Any help or comments welcome.

Some are better than others, however it is the track laying that makes the real difference. Poor track will give poor performance.

There older Dapol models do have a reputation of being fast or stopped, however this has not been my experience.

Take a read of the Farish and Dapol forums in the products section if you have not done so already for a 'user sampling'. I have only limited experience via a friend of some of the Farish 'Blue Riband' N gauge steam models. Safe to say these are day over night improvements over the Poole GF product designs; similar to the upgrade OO steam got from 1999, with the move to mechanism designs developed and proven on HO product.

As posted above, you do need to 'do your bit' in high grade tracklaying to fully exploit the performance potential. But if you can make current OO run to the desired performance standard, you should be able to obtain the same from current N.
