Class 127 at GCR

Hi all,

over the last three times i have been riding up and down the GCR in Leicestershire, my home county, i have seen the 127 Languishing and rotting away off a bogie on one powercar.... the last class 120 unit is not fairing any better and for some reason the owners have disappeared off the face of the earth.

now considering the rarity of the class 127 surely something should be done to get it repaired.

is there anything we can really do?

i say yes, we could start a movement on RMweb?

No we couldn't. RMWeb is a railway modelling forum, we don't get involved in prototype projects.

That is a precise answer, in the negative, but I fear lacks a little finesse to a fellow enthusiast I think.

You could have softened the blow in your reply by finishing with a positive comment.

I have done some modding in my time for fellow enthusiasts and I certainly would have been slightly more friendly than you.

There are occasions when it's more appropriate to give a very definitive statement for the benefit of all rather than possibly giving false expectations. We used to get it a lot when a person suggested that RMweb commission a product. That gets a really strong 'No'.

In this case efforts would be better directed toward a preservation led site.

Im fine with the responce Mod gave me, if the forum site guidelines say that the site is for modelling affairs (which has just been outlined) then that's fine i respect the decisions of the Moderating team and Andy.

I am not disheartened at all by the decision, i now understand what the total and sole focus of the forum is, so no harm done :)

Hi,

As i work with 3 different scales i'll add what i know about the 127 at the GCR.

Unfortunately it has been out of service for nearly a decade now, owing to operation issues, opening the doors was one of them. Yes all the vehicles now need major attention, which does not appear to be forthcoming. I do recall seeing a start had been made on the interior of one vehicle.

The class 120 centre car will i'm sure not run again unless money on the lottery grant size is found due to the vehicle being full of the nasty blue insulation material!!

Anyway, while 127s are rare, a good working example of this class of DMU exists at the Midland Railway Centre, where one of the power cars is being completely refitted internally and also making provision for wheelchair accomodation.

Something that i happen to know plenty about and yes i often reply that i work in 12" to the foot as well as N gauge and also build the occasion 7mm locomotive kit when asked, which reminds me i must finish it...and post some pictures...!

Cheers

glad to know (some) work has begun on it, shame about the middle carriage though....

i'm hopefully going to uni next year so some work experiance will not go amiss during my time in the summer and when i'm at Uni so details to help on the project, if i can would be great :)

Thanks,

LT

I'd like to see the 120 TSRB inseted into the 2 car 119 we have on the Swindon and Cricklade (once it gets going) as no 119 centre cars were saved. I'm sure they're similar enough but money and time always will come in to it.

ooh, shall check that out smile.gif

thanks, LT

Hi,

The 127 at the GCR and the SDR are owned by the same group, 'the red triangle society'. There is a lone power car over in Wales at the Llangollen Railway and a centre car based at the chasewater Railway. The largest collection is at the Midland Railway, 3 power cars and one centre car.

Not a vast amount left and will get smaller as time goes on! Shame really beats a 101, 108 and 117 for rarity though!

Hope that helps

Unfortunately absolutely true, from bitter experience with the 126. The 120 TSRB beats them all for rarity as it's the only Blue Square Swindon-built DMU vehicle left anywhere and one of only three surviving DMU buffet cars. The Swindon Inter-City vehicles at Bo'ness and in Liberia (recently discussed in the Overseas Prototype section) are/were all White Circle coupling code. Inserting the Class 120 trailer between the Class 119 power cars is an excellent idea. I travelled on a set just like that in 1987.
