Ozexpatriate
This seems a popular topic today, to whit: the drowning Donald dilemma. I'd lump it in the same category as the "what do you call a thousand lawyers chained together at the bottom of the ocean?" (1) or the "what is the first thing you do with a time machine?" (2) jokes. All hypothetical and funny to a point but a bit cruel even if the subject is deserving of scorn. Answers below (if you insist): 1. A good start2. Go back in time and take out the FührerThen there's real schadenfreude - like the present plight of Roger Ailes - back on the topic of TV mouthpieces. Derekstuart
I can predict with great certainty that Godwin's law is going to be very much in evidence here soon... What a wise, compassionate and honourable Hippo you are. There are plenty of people that I would not mind seeing eased out of the way on a permanent basis (several of them on RMW) but to wish people to go in possibly the most horrific way imaginable is not cricket. Having seen six people burn to death in an crashed aircraft, I would not wish that sort of death on anyone.

Too late, sad to say, and it was my fault. I did have the decency to use virtual invisible ink.

Derekstuart
Looking at the trump link above, it does seem that the Western World is getting more and more full of hate by the day. Don't like a politician or other public figure? Simple- just wish death on him/her. I'm trying to think which social philosopher (or psychologist as they are now called) which predicted the regression of the mentality of the human race back to cave man/woman mentality. I'm sure it was a contemporary of Machiavelli (though not his work I am sure)- he noted that the renaissance would last perhaps decades, perhaps Centuries but eventually the power paradox (yes, that affects ALL of us- we ALL have some power now) will eventually cause the regression of mind. A typical RMW thread in 'wheeltappers' can be a good micro to explain the macro events of perhaps Centuries in the real World.
Ozexpatriate
Looking at the trump link above, it does seem that the Western World is getting more and more full of hate by the day. Don't like a politician or other public figure? Simple- just wish death on him/her. Actually it creates a number of questions for me. Effective humour is designed to shock and doesn't necessarily mean it is hate filled even if it is dark. The medium of the joke-telling however makes a difference. Seeing it in writing, versus hearing the spoken word (like a standup comic or someone down at the pub), has a much greater impact. The other problem is that in writing sarcasm can be difficult to detect. In our internet-based world this is affecting human communications. People take things literally when they shouldn't, absent other non-verbal cues, (a grin, a wink and a nod etc) that accompany verbally delivered sarcasm. That literalism is moving into the spoken word as well and the dangers of such literalism were evident in the US Presidential campaign last week - and were directly relevant to your comment: Don't like a politician or other public figure? Simple- just wish death on him/her. Where this quite literally appeared to be the case - though of course that particular candidates's proxies passed it off as a joke, much like they do with many things that candidate says. The other extreme is of course well intended political correctness where 'hateful' things are not to be spoken at all, but surely some level of correctness is necessary when a candidate, even jokingly, implies that supporters "should do something" about a rival candidate. There are jokes that as senior schoolboys my cohort shared around that make me cringe today. It shames me to think I repeated them. I was ignorant of their biases. Humour can go too far. It's a complicated question.
Derekstuart
It is generally the case though that people are getting less and less well disposed to others. I came up with a theory that so far has not been dispoven how certain political leanings are pre-disposed towards hate and more importantly why that should be the case. I don't want to repeat it here less I start a war of words with people. (not yourself as you clearly are a man of learned discourse who can either agree or disagree without being shocked). Actually- there's a point. These days people are becoming more and more professionally shocked/disgusted/frightened/confused. Example: A recent "tv star" was spoken to harshly by someone she claimed to be a copper- rather than just say it's only words and move on, she made a big thing about it and said she was frightened and confused. Everyone is offended these days and you better agree with me or I will be emailing the Telegraph telling them how disgusted and shocked I am.
RMweb Premium jjb1970 Posted August 17, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 17, 2016 Black humour is often a powerful stress relief tool and aid to help people cope with difficult experiences, its no coincidence that many Police officers, medical staff, military people etc have seriously dark senses of humour and are able to find amusement in just about anything. Is it insensitive and in poor taste? Yes. Does it indicate that a person is heartless, enjoying the misfortune of others or just bad? I'd argue that in most cases no. I must admit I've seen quite a few bad things in life and had some bad experiences and I think some of the things I've laughed at would be considered grossly offensive by many as to be quite honest if I hadn't saw humour in certain things I'd have gone mad. Derekstuart
Hello Arthur, how jolly nice to hear from you again. I do so very much enjoy reading your comments. I bet you are just the life and soul of your town and are great fun at parties. As others have said, it is just "black humour". Were I serious about easing people out of the way on a permanent basis rather than engaging in "black humour" then I can assure you that you would not be here to make such a comment. Really?, you'd be happy to see some people on here 'eased out of the way on a permanent basis'. Very compassionate of you. I am genuinely saddened though to read some of the comments from others here. I do not like those two people or what they stand for, but I feel no need to be rude or offensive about them personally. .... would make a lovely couple. Or at least spare anyone else being married to either of them.... I rest my case.
