F2Andy
I am looking forward to getting some modelling space, about 9' by 15", and thought I could do something in N gauge; a simple fiddle yard to BLT. However, I would like to have it electrified, and I am not finding much in the way of EMUs at all. I am planning to set it in the early sixties so it will have steam and wagon load freight too. I am not bothered about 3rd rail or overhead, but it would need to suit a small station; a 4-CEP would be too big (and I would prefer not SR). Preferably RTR, but I would consider a kit if there is nothing else (I have built white metal and plastic kits in 009 so have some experience). RMweb Gold Joseph_Pestell Posted August 18, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 18, 2016 Check out the BH Enterprises website. Quite a few listed there (kits). If painting a problem, there are printed coloured sides available from Electra Graphics.
DavidB-AU
Electra does a 302, 304, 305, 308 and 501. Cheers David
F2Andy
Thanks, I had seen Electra, and wondered how they look, in particular at the ends. Have you any personal experience? DH enterprises I had not found; they look like they could be the solution.
RMweb Gold Revolution Mike Posted August 18, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 18, 2016 If you are happy doing some work yourself then look at Worsley Works as well - scratchbuild aids more than full kits. It really depends on what you are after - there isn't so much available for early non-SR EMUs. Cheers, Mike
RMweb Premium Ian Smeeton Posted August 18, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 18, 2016 Any ideas on 303 or 311 (Glasgow Blue Trains) for N/2mm scale? Regards Ian
37Oban
Any ideas on 303 or 311 (Glasgow Blue Trains) for N/2mm scale? Regards Ian Hi, I'm currently building a model of a station based on a "just supposing" route between the Cathcart Circle and Queen Street (High Level), and as the period is 1968-72 I need some 303s I've commissioned some frets from Alan at Worsley Works, and they are just scratch aids; all he supplies are the sides, ends and under-frames so I'm having to source roofs, motor, bogies and numerous other bits. The cost of commissioning isn't too excessive, but it soon adds up when you have to add all the extra gubbins! I've just assembled some 8'6" LNER bogies from Ultima and the 8' version are available from the same source or in whitemetal from BH Entreprise. The Ultima versions look good but are fiddly to assemble. Well, they are for me as I can only use one hand! When I fit the bogies to my first, fairly complete, 303 I'll post a couple of pictures, most likely by Monday. Regards Roja
RMweb Gold Revolution Mike Posted August 19, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 19, 2016 Are they LNER Gresley bogies? If so you might be able to get some from Dapol. Cheers, Mike

Cheers, Mike Hi, Ultima do the 8'6" heavy duty and 8' LNER bogie, so the Dapol ones should be okay, though if you do build a 303 the power car had 2 heavy duty bogies, the 2 driving cars the standard type. RMweb Premium keefer Posted August 19, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 19, 2016 apologies if i've misread, but the motor bogies are not just heavy duty 'normal' gresley bogies light/heavy duty gresley bogies look sort of the same apart from rivets above the axleboxes - light duty have a single row, heavy duty have two rows the EMU power bogies have a quite more substantial sideframe actually found a thread on RMWeb while searching for suitable images: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/21611-class-303-gresley-bogies/

However, in N I don't think anyone will notice at normal viewing distance, whatever that is, however, in 4mm and above it would be noticeable. Something to bear in mind once St Mungo's is finished and I embark on an EM terminus. As you can see, still lots to do, had friends this weekend so modelling took a back seat. As regards the bogies..., well, I had a struggle. In the end I used some Grafar coach bogies from my spares box, filed the detail of the frames and thinned them, thinned the whitemetal frames then superglued them to the bogies, the Ultima frames didn't need thinning. The result is true-running bogies without trying to keep things absolutely square (Ultima) or struggling to fit the wheels (BH Enterprise) No doubt others manage quite well but, as I said before, I can only use one hand so it's a bit of a learning curve. There's still a lot to do, mainly detailing, but I need to sort out a power bogie. Initially I was going to use a modified Grafar chassis, then just a power bogie mounted in the kit floor but now I'm thinking at making my own 'ladder' chassis from brass 'L' section and pcb strip. Time to experiment!
