The Bigbee Line
I'm always looking for loads etc to add a little interest to s train without being too odd ball. This shot shows what appears to be new tractors on 2 axle wagons. Any idea on the tractors, where they are from? What are the wagons? https://www.flickr.com/photos/robertcwp/28519782373/sizes/l
RMweb Gold russ p Posted August 29, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 29, 2016 Morning Ernie, bit of a long shot, but either SSAs or some kind of continental
Arthur
The tractors are 1970's International Harvesters and they had a plant in Doncaster. Impossible to identify the actual model from that image.
Mark Saunders
I agree with Russ That they are Steel AB's SAA/B as there was a traffic of Aggracultural Vehicles loaded on these! Mark Saunders
Arthur
Here's an example showing the general family look at the time, they were built in different sizes and powers. The brand, and the Doncaster factory, were subsequently part of Case and then McCormick empires.
Fat Controller
The wagons look as though they could be SAAs- one of Dave Larkin's albums of BR wagons has photos of wagons load with tractors in South London. I believe they were shipped from either Ridham Dock or Sheerness.

Working Wagons Vol 2 `1974-1979 by Larkin, page 83 has three tractors loaded on SAA 400180 passing Nunhead, en-route Doncaster to Sheerness. Southernman46
Definitely SAA's The train used to pass Gillingham about 10:45 in the am going to Sheppey - can't recall the Up working so probably "after hours" Ran pretty much throughout the summer of 1978 as I recall
Theakerr
Don't know what a SAA is but to me they look a bit like the car flats that were made from old Mk1 chassis
RMweb Gold russ p Posted August 29, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 29, 2016 An SSA is only twin axle, they spent most of their time a runners on steel trains. Hornby made a model of them ,not sure that is was very accurate though

It's a shame that the Hornby wagon has the bolsters in the raised position; has anyone tried modifying one?
