RMweb Gold Clearwater Posted August 31, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 31, 2016 Hi I will be visiting York tomorrow and i notice that there is a Scarborough flyer service scheduled to leave around 1145. I note the train originates at York Holgate (via the helpful uk mainline steam site). Can anyone confirm where that is and whether the loco and train will be prepped at the NRM before leaving? Many thanks in advance David
RMweb Gold colin penfold Posted August 31, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 31, 2016 David I think that Holgate refers to the sidings under the Holgate Road railway bridge ( there used to be an excursion platform there ) I guess it's a holding point prior to entering the platform for pick up. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.9537689,-1.0990447,3a,75y,90t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s79u59xxFqHmle57vv_YgSg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656
RMweb Gold Clearwater Posted August 31, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 31, 2016 Thanks Colin - much appreciated. It seems a pity to go to York to see locomotives and miss one actually in steam! David

RMweb Gold Enterprisingwestern Posted August 31, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 31, 2016 At one time of day you could stand on Holgate platform and take pictures, I doubt you can now. Mike.

hmrspaul
Does the platform still exist? I'm not sure it does. Regards As he said, no. Very unfortunate as this is a really good place to see all trains south of York before they split to go through the station or around the avoiding line. Probably good for my home life as it is only 3 minutes walk away and I would go there much more regularly if it was easier to photograph there. Still its not impossible as a location http://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/musselballast/e2ad130ac Now I live so close it is incredibly how frequently photographs are published in the mags of trains passing beneath Holgate bridge (it was lower in steam days - the whole bridge was raised for electrification) Paul

RMweb Premium Richard E Posted September 3, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 3, 2016 One road in Holgate sidings has been relaid in recent weeks (the one furthest from the running lines), it looks as if they might be going to do some more work there in due course. It is still possible to get close to the lines there and get some pictures, this was earlier this year although you are best off taking a step stool because of the fence. This was taken from just the station side of Holgate Bridge where access is possible on foot through the grounds of St Paul's Church. St Paul's Mews still overlooks the line but there is a 6' brick wall between the road and the railway now:

Further back before Love Lane footbridge gives more space to catch these, which is where the Mussel was off to. The trees and posts don't help at the St. Pauls church location either. RMweb Premium Richard E Posted September 3, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 3, 2016 Paul, thank you, that is useful information although I sometimes struggle to get down there and back within a reasonable time in my lunch hour .... Perhaps I need to plan my walks a bit better

Perhaps I need to plan my walks a bit better If it is from the station, do you know the way to walk to Love lane bridge? - Cinder Lane, Wilton Rise, Hamilton Drive (Although there is a more direct route using the back of St. Pauls Square (shown incorrectly on Google maps as Enfield Crescent). RMweb Premium Richard E Posted September 4, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 4, 2016 Given that work is right by the river at Lendal Bridge the easiest route is, I suspect, via Micklegate and Blossom Street (A1036) and then into Love Lane, just over a mile going that way. Slightly further via Hamilton Drive. Possible to make this a circular route of around 2.25 miles. The exercise will do me good, I need it!
