Toton Open days, 1979 and 1998

Hi,

 

would anyone happen to know what was at Toton open days in 1979 and 1998 please? I photographed a few of the loco's in 98, but was only a teenager, and didn't think to record the numbers of what was there

That's a useful link. Even though I took the numbers that day I was only 12 for most of that year so those records, being only on a scrap of paper and not in a book, have long since disappeared.

Never had a problem getting around Toton on a Sunday afternoon in the late 70s early 80s as a spotty teenager....

Toton in 1998 was a great day out.

I took my new girlfriend ! And she didn't dump me.

 

I brought my first loco there since 1985 - Lima 37057 inEWS.

That list from June 1979 doesn't seem very much for an open day.

 

In fact I think I have seen more there on a normal weekend.

The list tallies with my notes for the day, though I also recorded 0-6-0T 16440, and HST 43000, and some DMU sets. 

I suspect the depot authorities may have thinned out the locos on shed to create some circulating space?

 

It must have been an organised coach trip as I visited Saltley, Bescot, Derby (bridge near station).

And returning from Toton we called at Nottingham, Westhouses, Coalville and Leicester 

 

edit - it was an organised Cardiff and Avonside society trip

I was there in 79 but didn't record any numbers I'm afraid, Westhouses was an easy bash and so was Barrow hill  in its pre preservation days and living near Mansfield I spent half my youth at Derby....... Oh the memories

I see one of the last green 20s was there in 1979, but no-one seems to have photographed her on the day. Here's 20 141 a few weeks later.

From memory there were a number of green 20s. As well as 141, 143 and 147 were both still in green at that point and there might well have been others.

I did not travel on the DMU shuttle having arrived on a coach tour but these are the DMUs I recorded near the end of my visit.

On that day on our way to Toton we saw green 20151 at Derby

 

edit - and I now see I do have a photo with green 20141 in it, though you can not tell at this distance!

The Open Day is mentioned in the Sept. 1979 RO

I can remember going to the Event. That 1979 open day was the revealing of Large Logo livery on 56036 to the public. Doncaster was still building Class 56 locos at that time and I think 56084 was the first production loco to leave "The Plant" in that livery. I am sure i have a picture somewhere of 56036 at Toton open day. I will try and find it.

20143 was NEVER in green, with TOPS numbers....

Slightly out of my comfort zone, but,I thought 56036 was revealed at a Derby works open day?

56036 certainly was on display at a Derby Works Open Day, but these were invariably held in August. So that would have post-dated the Toton event.

And 56036 (in its new livery) had moved around a bit by Aug 1979, because I saw it at Canton depot on 17th July that year.

56036 went large logo in late 1978, caused quite a stir amongst the sea of blue full yellow ends. I don't recall exactly when she was painted, but I remember seeing it in December that year at Coalville.
