I recently purchased a second hand Hornby R2728 Rebuilt Royal Scot but have discovered the rear coupling is completely missing. What bits do I need to find to put it right?

Thanks in advance :)

A coupling.

That drawing looks like an older version.  All you need is to clip the coupling back in.  They do have a habit of falling out.

With a NEM pocket too....

Ahh ok, I was not sure if it was as simple as a NEM pocket and coupling....the picture was confusing me slightly. I should have a spare one of those knocking around somewhere. Thanks both of you. :)

Welcome

Liking the sound of your layout plan...is that on the site of the Old Midland shed down by the Sauce Factory and opposite Metal Box?

Phil

Yes that is the site, although mine is a 'what if' type affair with a larger shed and more varied classes stabled there. (I'm working on the premise that the MR had a much larger control over the lines in the Worcester area).

Edit: How could I be so stupid, I knew I recognised the name 'Abbotswood Junction'. I remember that fantastic layout from the Model Rail issue it was in, I found it really inspiring. :)

I suspect that tender chassis, being introduced with the Black 5, was introduced before NEM sockets. So you need the type of coupling shown in the diagram, which is product code X9072 and available here (and probably other places):

I will try that if the other type does not work, thanks. :)

I may be wrong - that looks different from my Black 5 tender chassis. Looks like they've modified the mounting to take a NEM socket and not changed the instructions. As you were!

Well, heaven forfend that Hornby would change the design AND change the instructions to match! :D

Definitely need the NEM socket and compatible coupling. Duff design this, they are for ever either drooping or dropping off. I now drill a small hole through the NEM box and coupler (in situ) and then into the tender chassis to secure. Note that Bachmann NEM sockets are subtly different and only fit in each manufacturers respective models.

Useful advice, I will look into securing mine in some way. I thought I had a spare one but could not find it so I have ordered a pack of Hornby NEM couplings/pockets. Never hurts to have spares anyway. :)

Being rather lazy by disposition I just dab a spot of solvent, Mek or Butanone, onto the fish tail. Works a treat and if applied sparingly the joint can be easily broken if desired.

Could be worse - a soggy bottom!

And we use Bernard's stick it dodge with problem fishtails too....

Thanks for the kind words about Abbotswood. Used to cycle over there from Ombersley - which bit of the County are you?

Cheers

Near to Stourport, and I work at Footplate in Kidderminster which is nice and handy. :)

Order is restored, thanks for all the tips. :)

I took the easier option of just putting a dab of glue to hold it in place, but will look at fixing it more securely if it falls off in the future.
