GWR coach bogie drawings

Hi

After a considerable delay on my part, I went back to my proposed model of the GWR articulated non corridor stock. five coach bodies have been made so far - lots of filler and sanding to come - hopefully body number six will be done this weekend.

I can then start on the chassis for them. but I also need some 8ft 6 inch bogies. I know 247 Dev used to do these but are currently unavailable.

I could cheat and simply use 7ft ones. I feel like I ought to use something representational of the real thing. I';ve some experience of 3D design and would be willing to have a go at designing some and having them printed.

My sticking point is I need some drawings on which to base any designs. There is nothing in Russell or Harris, does anyone know where I could get hold of some reasonably accurate drawings?

Thanks in advance guys*

I'm guessing that the articulated coaches you are making are those used on the Main Line and City service, since I am not familiar with any other kind.  Long shot coming up: if you can find a copy of the Model Railway Constructor [long since deceased magazine where Chris Leigh started his career] for May 1962 you will find drawings of those coaches and the bogies on which they ride.

Probably easier to obtain is the HMRS book on GW Siphons by Jack Slinn and Bernard Clarke.  There are drawings of several bogies in that.

Hi.

Having googled to find images from MRC May 1962 it seems that these are not the articulated sets

Oh dear, you have found an imperfection in my memory and I can only apologise.

There are drawings of GW 8 ft 6 in bogies in 'GW Siphons' on page 103.  The bogies are described as 'the ex-articulated stock bogies' which I read as bring those on which the articulated corridor sets of the 1920s ran.  When these vehicles were rebuilt into free-standing vehicles the bogies were freed for further use.  Whether these bogies were also used under the three Main Line and City artic sets I know not.  Bear in mind that not all is what it seems where the GWR is concerned.

If you cannot lay your hands on the book do send me a PM and I'll get the scanner fired up.  Just don't tell everyone.

Thanks Chris, I take your point with regard to the GWR. I expect they are probably the same bogies. I'll see if I can find a copy of the book, otherwise I'll be in touch
