RMweb Premium petethemole Posted September 22, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 22, 2016 That's the only reason to get up on Saturday when I could have a lie-in.
darrel
Brian Matthews is a legend. I've got loads of recordings of the shows he did with the Beatles back in the day
Wheatley
Brian Matthew is 88, Phil Swern is 69. Maybe they fancy a rest ? Agreed that whatever they replace it with will be a poor substitute, especially if it's that plank.
Poor Old Bruce
Brian Matthew is a legend. And he is knocking on a bit! Perhaps he wants to retire.
BG John
Sounds of the Sixties! That evolved into Sounds of the Seventies in January 1970, and was wiped from the airwaves a few years later. 6 to 7pm every weekday evening has never been the same since. A different style of rock music each day of the week, and all brilliant. Then on Saturdays there was two hours of John Peel in the afternoon, following by In Concert in the evening. A break from it on Sunday, and back to the great music again on Monday. Although there were a few good rock programmes on BBC local radio on Sundays to fill in the gap. Tony Davis
Dermot already has a show which I have had the misfortune to have (briefly) listened to, the loss of the Brian Matthews show is bad enough, to not even have the show continued albeit with a different host is worse, to have Mr O'Leary is too much to bear. edcayton
If it's abut the music then give Bob Harris a better time for his show. BTW Johnnie Walker does Sounds of the 70's on a Sunday afternoon. I think he does a good and well-informed job. It is certainly better than GQT and the classic serial on Radio 4. Fat Controller
On a related topic; does anyone else remember a programme on Sunday mornings on either R1 or R2 during the early 1970s that used to feature a lot of stuff like Janis Ian, Jim Croce and so on? Who was the presenter?

Andrew1974
To be honest I am not surprised. I grew up listening to the show on s Saturday morning, it was my dads favourite. However In recent years, IMHO, the tracks have become more and more obscure, and instead of it being a celebration of great 60's music it is more of a vanity project so the host can show off about how much trivia he knows and how big his collection of random tracks no one else has ever heard of is. Neither me nor my dad hardly listen anymore!
RMweb Premium Legend Posted September 23, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 23, 2016 It's part of the fabric of the nation. Like others I tune in on the Saturday , but I also often catch the repeat on Monday mornings on my way south. Happy that we've got Graham Norton back at 10. If I remember correctly back in the 80s Sounds of the Sixties used to occupy the 10-12 slot. I find Desmond O'Learys show at 3 a bit dull and usually reach for off button, so hope he is not the 8-10 replacement. I actually quite like Anneka Rices show which is on from 6-8. She also has a slot remembering Ed Stewpot Stewarts show . If Sots has to go , then I'd prefer Anneka. But if it ain't broke don't fix it!

Maybe I should start listening before it's too late!
exmoordave
It will be sad if it does in fact , disappear, but I have to agree with Andrew 1974 above. A lot of the tracks played are very obscure, and the object of the show is surely to invoke memories of the majority of listeners - not just the odd one. When he plays a B-side of a 45 that wasn't even a hit, by an artist/group, you've never heard of, then my interest wanes. To be fair to BM though, most of the tracks are probably selected by the Producer, who may feel he has to display his vast knowledge of 60s music. But, overall it will be sad to see it go. From my own perspective, the main time I listen, is if I'm on my way to a model railway show!!! Best to all exmoordave
RMweb Premium petethemole Posted September 23, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 23, 2016 I like to hear the 'obscure' B sides and album tracks. These would only be heard at the time by those who bought the records, because the radio stations didn't play them much, or at all. Late 60s 'underground' albums got more exposure thanks to the likes of John Peel.

Neither me nor my dad hardly listen anymore! I would disagree there, and will be sad to see it go. During the week listening to radio 2 at various hours of the day and night I keep hearing the same tracks over and over, I find it refreshing to hear some more obscure music from time to time. Craig Charles (I am not a great fan) also has a slot 'Not only but also' where he plays tracks by an artist I may not otherwise hear, cheers
RMweb Premium jjb1970 Posted September 23, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 23, 2016 Another stage in the downward trajectory of Radio 2. I used to love Radio 2, now I mainly listen to Radio 4 and Radio4X.

Do you want a baby boomer nostalgia fest or do you want a programmer that illustrates the diversity of music of the time and how it developed? Personally I want the latter. steve
Wheatley
The programme has been running for more than three times as long as the 1960s did. There were only ever 520 Top Tens in the whole of the 1960s, and most of them had largely the same records in as the one either side of them, so that's a limited number of 'mainstream' records to go at. It's bound to get a bit obscure unless you want the same 500 records on a continuous loop. TBH I'm surprised it's lasted this long and I wouldn't be too bothered if it went, but not that grinning idiot to replace it. Meanwhile, does anyone else remember Noel Edmonds and his R4 continuity announcer doing snooker on the radio on his R1 Sunday show in the 80s ? I will be sad to see it go.

I keep my eyes open for original 'Fluff'-era Pick of The Pops recordings which sometimes are offered on CD by enthusiasts. While the charts are pure nostalgia, the real delights are often to be found in "Unit 2 - The New Releases" section, for some of which I wonder if that was their only play, having never heard them before. RMweb Premium jjb1970 Posted September 24, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 24, 2016 I'm waiting for them to announce that Question Time will be replaced by Graham Norton goes X rated and that Chris Evans will be the new presenter of Newsnight. In the case of Newsnight it might not be particularly far fetched given the decline of that show in recent years.
